100 000 spiders and one cave
They have now discovered one cave in South Europe contains 100 000 spiders who live there
Luckily no people will under normal circumstances wander into that cave
https://www.hs.fi/tiede/art-2000011612037.html
It is at the border of Greece and Albania, no people live right next to it.
Cave explorers went investigating with special border permissions and stumbled into spider cave.
They found spider communite made from two cooperating species.
Tegenaria Hellenica, who is not keen on making webs but runs down prey. And Prinerigone Vegans who is extreme web builder.
Now they both simply co-exist eating cave mosquitoes. There is water in the caves housing mosquito larvae. Adult mosquitoes emerge only to fly onto webs to be eaten by spiders.
It is not known how there can be 50-50% spider population made from two different species since only one contributes to the webs.
Maybe a species of cave beetle is the answer? Will the hunting spider chase after them?
Mosquitoes eat a thick biofilm made from cave bacteria. Bacteria use cave chemicals as their source of power. These are not blood sucking variety of mosquitoes, not all of the mosquito species infact have sucking mouth parts.
They already put the spiders into genetic sequencer only to find out spiders have been diverging from the non cave dwelling brethren for several thousands of years.
