Ukrainian territory is no longer valueable nor strategic.

Defences have been built there since 2022, but they were built against an attack from the south. Since then they are undermanned due to needs to man defences in Donbas, and what remains of the trenches in the south is also being bypassed by Russians from the east now.

From what I remember that day, the Russian soldiers didn't even seem to be aware that what they were doing was a very real act of war and that they could be killed at any moment, many reported that they were told that it was some kind of exercise/peaceful operation, not a straight up invasion (which led to very poor organization when shit hit the fan).
And as everyone saw that day, they were also poorly equipped (if at all), they were clearly not prepared for a real engagement.
