Ok the real problem with therapy is people don’t understand the point of therapy. They’re not a philosopher or historian or teacher or trainer, they don’t fix your brain by replacing a pipe or changing the oil, they’re not a mind altering substance or a judge. For most of their clientele, who are dysfunctional and double digits IQ, they don’t need to try to complicate shit by challenging their beliefs or teaching them complex concepts or anything like that, most of these people genuinely just don’t know how to communicate their feelings even to themselves, i.e. they don’t know how their own minds work and don’t even think to consider where a feeling is coming from, they simply react to the feeling being there. For these people the best thing a therapist can do is compel their clients to lay out their stories and ask questions that indirectly coerce them into taking a less dramatic opinion of events than they previously held. This mode is best characterized as the stereotype of “how does that make you feel?” and being a shoulder to cry on, as again, most people’s “traumas” are just chronic misunderstandings.

Furthermore, the client pays someone’s money to be there and can walk away at any time, the therapist can’t enforce or challenge anything and can only make a living if they don’t chase their clients off. I wouldn’t say they’re incentivized to keep them ill, they just can’t push. My point is, for the average clientele just “being heard” suffices to keep their egos salved, for people with real issues therapy can help provide coping strategies to take with you and give you a place to help reframe your thoughts every week or two, help keep you centered. If you bye for control or are otherwise resistant to authority or influence you won’t get much as most therapists will just let you talk yourself in loops to help you “reach your own conclusions” and avoid confrontation.

He had dealt with similar, was a great listener/Jungian scholar, all around someone I actually still trust and consider a mentor. He really helped me navigate thru some of the darkest times in my life.
He also, one session rather out of the blue, raised the stakes in a story I was discussing about my Father to
