Why is walkability such a controversial topic to Americans while it's common sense to everyone else in the world?

"Walkability" is Leftist-speak for "eat ze bugs, bigot!" It's never about sensible urban planning like, say, Riverside, Illinois. It's always about forcing high-density urban housing into rural/suburban places near urban cores, where the urban core has turned into a ridiculously overpriced hellscape (NYC, Seattle) so that the low-wage service workers can commute (e.g., from Kenmore, WA or from Hauphaug, Long Island, NY) to service their elites/betters.

In most of America the towns are smaller and more spread out. It would take me probably 2-hours round trip to walk to the closest grocery store. In the city it’s usually not more than a few blocks but the city is dangerous and full of drug addicts who will rob you trying to walk to the store.

You can have a walkable area without banning personal transportation. Its just more convenient to be closer to services and recreation so that you don't HAVE to rely on a car for everything.

I can walk for 10-15 minutes and get to a grocery strore, a bank, a medical clinic, more than one park, and even a few small restaurants. Doesn't stop me from owning a car to get to other places/directly into the city if I need to.

When I first lived there, Yonghe was the second-highest-density urban area on the planet, second only to some pajeet shithole in Sri Lanka.

I guess you're right about not driving in a pod since you can take the MRT everywhere, but as far as working in pods, that's high-end in Taiwan; low-end is working in a dilapidated factory where the owner cares so little about you that he doesn't even give out basic safety equipment.
