People always say “Japan is for the Japanese” yet there are 1.4-1.6 MILLION Japanese people living in America whereas there’s only about 66 THOUSAND American citizens living in Japan. There are also far more Japanese people living in Europe than Europeans living in Japan. What’s with this hypocrisy?

I lived in San Diego and knew a few Japanese people during university due to coursework (my degree was international business so I took Japanese courses), but they were even there few and far between. I agree with you that I am very doubtful there are that many Japanese Americans. I have met perhaps 10 in my time including working as an aide at a research foundation years back. By contrast I have met hundreds if not thousands of Chinese Americans.

I've had times posting while vacationing in the country and it was simply assumed I was Japanese due to flag --though I've never bragged about a Japanese wife. As one such person, I originally came to like Japan due like many Americans in the early 90's to anime in childhood. Later I became interested in them because of their isolationist culture and language. Growing up living in a border town, Spanish seemed too familiar to interest me, so I quickly grew bored of it. The inaccessibility of the Japanese language and writing system as an outsider was fascinating to me. I quickly memorized much of the writing system in my first year of university. It's not until later that you come to understand how mundane the culture is, but that is the case with any culture once you pierce the mystique. It's all where you are. To me San Diego is just a city. To the Japanese I have met it is a far-off jewel where anything can happen.
