If you're using matlab or octave, the derivative is actually mind-bogglingly easy and really just 3 lines of code. You could get it down to 1 line but that doesn't make it go faster.

But calculus has a problem. For a long time it didn't know it had it, but in the 1800's it was discovered.
See calculus is about things in the limit, right? And so they wondered what sort of numbers to use, and they knew about rational numbers, but they knew that some sequences of rational numbers converged to non-rational numbers, so they had to invent a set of numbers that included those limits. And they defined "real numbers" to be the set of limits of any sequence of rational numbers. This includes the rationals, but a far denser set of non-rationals.
And then a couple assholes named Banach and Tarski came along in the 1800's and showed that these numbers are not "measurable". That you could take a cube of them in 3-D, take it apart, put it back together again, and get a different sized cube. The numbers were meaningless, not useful to measure anything!
And Kolmogorov took it seriously and invented a whole bunch of probability theory that was just the regular old stuff, with integrals over "Borel sets" of real numbers rather than the real numbers themselves. Borel sets are weird and incomprehensible, but they are measurable.
All other fields, including physics, choose to just ignore that their measurements are meaningless according to the math involved, or just assume there's a definition that cures the problem.
Actually Edward Nelson redefined real numbers in a reasonable way that fixes the problem, but nobody seems to mention his definitions anymore, and instead just pretends that "real numbers" are adequate.
