That is pretty awful. I pay 40 canabucks a month for 0.5Gbps, and I think that's barely adequate.

i can get 1gbps for £30

the government started putting out contracts for small startup ISP's to deliver FTTP in rural areas. there are farms and shit with faster speeds than towns and cities.

Damn I thought I had it bad. I pay 65$/mo for 6 mbps. Though, I just got a notice that it's going to be upped to $70/mo next month. I'm too scared to switch to a wireless plan that uses the cell towers out here because muh wired latency and because if I switch off my plan, I won't be able to get another wired plan (none offered out here in bumfuck nowhere anymore including the one I currently have). I would switch in a heartbeat if they offered fiber.

The UK telecoms and internet sectors have previously been fairly competitive. But they've started manipulating prices and contracts, and ofcom is in cahoots with them, ofcom works for them, not the consumer. For example 24 month contracts and a price increase every april (so you'll probably get 2 before your contract is up). Prices all in the same ball park figure. Only recently has there been investment in the infrastructure that has lead to speed increases and increased reliability. I pay £20 per month for around 70mb download, 20mg upload. Rolling 30 day contract (special deal)

5G is also slowly rolling out across the board. It seems there is much more freedom in this market than the US. I pay £10 per month for unlimited calls + SMS (bit pointless these days) and 80GB data. No contract. I'm inbetween major cities, and there is limited capacity for an overpopulated area, so my data speeds are pretty bad. Generally 8-10mb download during peak, 30-40mb off peak. 5G isnt in my area yet.
