Brother, I have just come from traveling all over China, and the infrastructure is fucking crazy. To build the high speed rail and expressway networks they have basically straight-lined these absolutely ridiculous landscapes with thousands upon thousands of enormous bridges and tunnels and viaducts.
We went to see the newly built world's tallest bridge (not the one which collapsed, this is being incorrectly reported), and on the way we drove underneath the world's second tallest bridge just an hour or so up the road. Didn't even know it was there, but that's normal in China, to randomly drive over what would be the single most impressive building achievement for most countries. But it's just one of hundreds in China. They are off the charts with that kind of shit compared to any other country.
I come from a smaller country (not Vietnam) but I have traveled the world and never seen anything remotely comparable to the infrastructure you see leading to a nothing town in the middle of nowhere in China. Also, no reason to believe any of it is poor quality, I never saw any signs of wear and tear or poor construction, never saw anything broken or closed (although I did see a few random expressways and bridges which for some reason never got finished). This bridge collapsed because of a landslide. If you think you hear about it a lot, it's probably because they have more of that kind of thing than every other country in the world combined, and they just keep building more and more.
I will be called a shill I'm sure but trust me I have plenty of bad things to say about China. But the infrastructure is not one of those things, it is fucking incredible and probably the literal greatest ever achievement of humanity. It's the thing that impressed me the most, I kept talking about it to Chinese and they didn't seem to care, to them it's just roads and shit, they seem to think every country does that.
