Dwayne was just bad at it. Making fun of people and doing stupid impressions were so fucking old by then it was pointless. Add Rock arguing with a child in his own house or nicknames that couldn't stick. At least Cena took some real shots to make it hurt in Rocky's mind. Dwayne was bad at doing his gimmick in a PG setting. For his most recent run, which was good, he broke out the profanity and blood and was edgier. It's been the same problem for the WWE for the last 20 years. Most people liked their product in the AE, but they softened it to appeal to advertisers. A lot of that isn't on Dwayne. Also, credit Cena for making PG bullshit work.
