You can't really. Every story with depth also has a surface layer. In wrestling, if anyone claims that the story is intentionally deeper than the surface later then they're called pretentious cunts and seeing things that aren't there.
The current Cena turn is a sophisticated storyline with nuance and depth. But wrestling fans are stupid so pointing out that professional writers might write characters with greater meaning than what they directly say or, shock horror, the bad guy might be lying or delusional in his views, makes them sperg out.
