Nothing against bret hart, but how someone like him that can't talk and have no charisma is considered one of the best of all time based on his ring work alone?

The pool of guys who are really good and can talk is smaller than people think. I'm not sure if people put modern guys like Seth and Kenny in these discussions but their out of ring is way worse than Bret's imo

Angle never cut a promo his entire career which he admitted on Stone Cold's old podcast. He was really good at remembering his lines but everything he ever did was pre-written by someone else. He didn't write a single word he said his entire career in a promo, not in WWE or TNA.

The responses in this thread indicate the real issue behind Bret's promo skills and why many people believe that he "can't talk" and has no charisma:
The issue is that Bret spent the majority of his peak as a babyface hero, which really didn't match his real-life personality. So his promos from that period weren't that good, even when he was being the 'tough' good guy
Bret's greatest work on the mic was when he was being an angry whiny heel, in other words his run in 1997. But it was such a short period that some people forget it and only remember his more dull, formulaic babyface promos from 1991-96

What makes those promos work isn't that he's whiny, it's that he legit sounded like he got screwed
I think the anti-american theme is the other part that gets misunderstood by the american audience and leads to him being underappreciated as a promo, because it's actually heartfelt and great. Sometimes a bit simplistic but when it hits, it hits hard.
I think the sad part of this is that it ended with him leaving for WCW, Bret was only a heel in two cases, when opposing Austin, and when cutting "anti-american" promos. But in the lead up to the Screwjob, when he's paired against HBK, he's still not really a full-on heel even as he strangles him with a canadian flag. Well sure he's in canada, but still. HBK playing the all-american hero against Bret never caught on.

If he had completed a face turn back in 98 or 99 after all that, he'd be remembered as a top 10 promo ever. Instead he was screwed, wasted, his brother died, his family fell apart, he got concussed and that was it.
