Was Shane right when he said that tag teams aren't a draw and the last tag team people cared about was the Legion of Doom

depends. How do E&C, Dudley's, and the Hardy boys compare to LoD? were they only big because of each other or do they stand on their own?

They definitely don't draw double what singles wrestlers do, which is the problem. They also have double the problems as it's 2 people who can get heat, get arrested, get injured and if one goes down, the other is useless.

Aside from that, you not only have to have a good team, but you need teams to fight them. And you constantly need new teams coming in and out...all for something that isn't really justified. When you consider all of that, it's easy to understand why they are usually just a midcard thing.

There have been plenty of good teams since Legion of Doom but tag team wrestling is more sport influenced rather than drama influenced and doesn't fit WWE's soap opera style focused on betrayal and grudge feuds

i don't think they were as big as LOD but they were definitely over
and their TLC matches are legendary so they are in the wrestling history books.

this is true, also wrestlers today want to get all their shit in and get themselves over in order to get bookings rather than put their partner over.

Thats what a coworker and i kinda agreed on, if there is a good solid team then its usually muvh better than the remaining teams. It seems to me like teams are just to get a guy familiar with the audience and getting them up to speed for a singles run. Or rebrand two people or just keep them in the mix. Its kinda hard to imagine a team heavy era right now, but los lotharios keep rolling along like new day or war raiders.....yay

Hardy’s and Dudley’s were as over as Too Cool was. They could get a pop and have fantastic matches but they were not the reason the butts were in the seats. Vince viewed tag team wrestling as a mid card attraction

tag teams break up the monotony of one on one matches and help establish younger would-be superstars and team them up with veterans who have reached their peak. it's a chance to make both wrestlers interesting again or put over other guys while they get their shit together (possibly.) also the matches feel different so it's important to a card.

>E&C, Dudley's, and the Hardy boys
This was the peak of tag team wrestling. The Road Warriors were obviously great but no one was asking to see them over Hogan and Savage etc. The Hardyz, Dudleyz, and E&C carved out a spot for themselves where no one would've even noticed them at the time with how star studded the roster was. Even with guys like Austin, Undertaker, Rock, Foley, Triple H, Kane, Jericho, Angle, etc. at the top of the card, those three teams were every bit as popular

Your same logic applies to Dudley’s/etc. no one was asking to see them over Austin, DX, or the Rock. You can’t knock LOD with your logic and not apply it towards the others. Hogan was the biggest draw of all time

Some of you are only familiar with the WWF watered down and past their prime LOD. The Road Warriors before that were basically like having two guys as over as peak Ultimate Warrior combined together. Huge main event draws in the south, AWA and Japan. A lot of fans can't even wrap their heads around tag teams as a main event, but it was a thing with them beating Jumbo and Tenryu, Dusty wanting to team with them, etc.

Meltzer's top draws based on attendance and main events

In the first PWI 500 in 1991, Hawk was 15 and Animal 18. If the 500 was a thing in the 80s, I could see them having years in the top 5 as those Apter mags were behind them as much as anyone. Road Warriors were in a whole different universe than Dudleys.

He's right. Dimes look, dimes intro, dimes wrestling style, dimes promos, etc. They could do it all. There have been popular tag teams and even great tag teams since but they were the GOAT.

Yes. Whatever passes for "over" now for tag teams is nothing compared to how legit over the Road Warriors were in their prime.

This but it's an understatement. NWA Road Warriors were at least as popular as Hogan amongst the hardcore fans at the time (kids) but had a much higher cool factor. Their WWF run was almost just a congratulatory run after their real run.

Savage was in his dad's outlaw promotion and didn't main event as WWF champ until 1988. Road Warriors were bigger draws in US and Japan around 1985. Road Warriors were the only team on Meltzer's list for any decade. Teams like Dudleys were B and C level attractions in part because that is mostly how teams have been booked since the 80s.

this and also a tag division is better for giving a variety of wrestlers a purpose on the roster than sticking a bunch of primarily singles wrestlers in a faction like triple h and tony khan like to do

You can throw out the dinosaurs they were fighting in the AWA, but they were part of a great tag team era in Crockett. Midnights/Horsemen/Russians were all good opponents, and even Barbarian/Warlord. Then on the backend of their run there it was the Samoan Swat Team, Sid and Spivey, the Steiners.

Your point is right, you’d never even know if you have a team capable of being on top because everyone is thrown together or garbage. They’ve mistreated the tag division for so long that it’s going to take an act of god to change perception.
