I don't mean this in relation to wrestling whatsoever, but are Nielson ratings a total work? I mean they're based on a small number of people who choose to get one of their boxes.
I get that you can extrapolate data from that shit but my dumb ass doesn't get how it can be particularly accurate.

The entire reason WCW got hot was their fans thought WWF wrestlers were invading the promotion

Neilsen families can get $300 a year or something so most will accept it. It's a weird math statistics thing where it should give a good ballpark idea within a certain margin of error, as long as the people are chosen at random. It's always funny when fans act like it is something significant when WWE or AEW ratings go up or down within that margin of error.

It's kind of like how you could pick a few grocery stores at random and get a feel for how much more Coke and Pepsi sell than cream soda or whatever. There's regional differences with RC Cola being more popular in the south and such, but Nielsen has families all over so it's more accurate than that.

What the fuck is he talking about? Barely anyone talked about wrestling online back then, only the smarkiest of nerds. Most people watched both promotions and flipped back and forth between Raw and Nitro.

I mean why bother pretending Tony doesn't paper the fuck out of his shows? What's the endgame??

Nielsen ratings are done by taking a sample, then doing a bunch of math to equalise the data into something roughly usable, they supposedly are very good at tracking whatever you're watching if you're in a Nielsen home. But every few years everyone throws shit at them claiming they're not good enough. And now everyone is keeping their own data in house anyway.

And on top of that you have to remember the stuff that reaches the general public is basically fucking meaningless anyway. They sell this shit to people for a lot of money, if anything that actually mattered was in, people would be getting cut off for leaking it, as has happened in the past. So think of it like this — anything public about ratings is the dregs that they don't care if it gets out and is bordering on meaningless for anything other than "that's not" or "becoming schizophrenic over wrestling promotions"

I was a Nielsen box owner for a while. You get money to have it in your home and it tracks your electronics usage; TV, computer, game systems, etc. On TV, it tracks what you watch. Nielsen themselves state that every box stands for roughly 20-25k viewers, assuming that more than just people with the box are watching a show. So if Dynamite does a 200k rating, that means 8-10 people with boxes watched the show.

It will give a general idea but people who talk about 30k or 50k viewer fluctuations like they mean anything are dumb as shit. That is just like 1 or 2 Nielsen box owners randomly changing the channel or going to bed. It's not actually 30k people. Anything under 100k is not really worth discussing
