Vince was a pretty damn good commentator actually. I appreciate how old timey and corny he sounded, even for the mid 90s.

Did people know that Vince was the owner of the company back then? It seems strange that the other comentators would talk to him like a peer, and refer to him by name, but then he became Mr McMahon and gave them orders.

The wrestling magazines would occasionally mention he was owner but most people didn't know. There used to be a clip on youtube where he had the British Bulldogs present him with a giant man of the year award (or something like that) at a MSG show. Crowd had no idea why announcer man was getting it.

Was it any worse than the Joey styles/excalibur school of thought where you just yell out the name of the movie? Arguably it’s better cause what a maneuver puts it over as impressive where as yelling “Kawada kicks!” At best tells you someone named Kawada did these kicks once.

It was actually the opposite in the 80s and early 90s he was fine then they got into the "New Generation" era and he got worse because he decided to do more sports entertainment charactery commentary instead of just calling it like a sport. Which you could tell at that point he wanted to be more than just the commentator which is why he let guys start to imply he was the real boss. Pretty sure the itch for him wanting to do more character stuff started when he did the stuff with USWA in '93 which his where "Mr. McMahon" was born.

Joey Styles worked because he was a scrawny guy in a suit, so you got with it when he was sounding more and more panicked and excited as he milked a move being setup and then screamed while you watched somebody fucking die

Vince was a great commentator, his problem was just that he needed to put over his own shit, and during the most memorable time of him commentating his product was terrible. Listen to him on this match with some real top grade guys where he doesn't have to put everyone over and he's great

pretty sure it was public knowledge that he was the guy that owned the WWF since he had full control, you cant really hide the ownership of a corporation like that, but probably not not the average person, if the casual viewer found that the commentary guy was the owner it probably wouldnt bother them al that much, by the time of the steroid trial pretty much everyone knew was the guy

his dad told him that promoters shouldn't be wrestlers, even though like half of the territories were ran by wrestlers or former wrestlers, what a waste though, he proved that he could be an absolute menace of a heel, possibly the greatest heel ever, sad we never got to his what he would have been like if was ever allowed to
