Nah I'm memeing, probably the invasion angle. Cornette came up with a very fucking solid build up to the Wrestlemania 2002 card (not the card itself which is just a boomer fantasizing about it on a KC interview)

Yes I can.
The end of the Attitude Era, the focal point: Austin-Goldberg, the straw that broke the camel's back.
WCW pivoted towards the downhill with Starrcade 97 but 1998 still had good material and the company slowly descended into madness.
When the WWE made its hypercorporate pivot, it's like they jumped off a cliff and collapsed with no premonitory feeling of "uh oh, something's wrong".

The shift from AE to Ruthless Aggression was one that the WWE despite its massive Netflix deal and record houses at extortionate ticket prices simply never recovered from.
More people watched the product 25 years ago than today.
It's a smaller pond with fatter fish, but nowhere near as many of them.

The brawl for all was much worse, they ruined a lot of people's careers with that one, then the winner gets the "prize" of being fed to Butterbean? Gay. At least Starrcade 97 only had one big fuckup, as opposed to the whole idea being a fuckup.

You guys can call me a mark for this all you want:
I lean "chud" in my personal beliefs, and I've always generally liked Hogan as a wrestler
But this one fuck-up is the reason why I'm glad Hogan's been getting all the backlash he's gotten from the general public in recent years
Hogan's an undisputed GOAT but the fact is he did way too much backstage politicking and other angle-ruining bullshit over the years just to keep himself looking strong and to bury others. And just about all of it went largely unpunished
And in my opinion, that bullshit at Starrcade '97 was the worst of them all. I was a huge Sting mark at that time, and I never got over that

Bro, IT WAS A WORK. If you don't believe me, watch some full nitro episodes from 1996-1997. One of the storylines was
>Hogan keeps using his backstage influence to stay on top
For instance, when Piper beat him at Starrcade 96, they did a story afterward where Bischoff and Hogan destroyed all the tapes so that Hogan's defeat could never be shown. It was all kayfabe. They did the weird finish at Starrcade to further the perception that Hogan was winning through politics. The fact that they had Bret Hart ready to come out and save the day is proof that it was all pre-planned. I can't believe people actually think this was a shoot.

Dude, you do realize the part that people take issue with was Hogan/Bischoff telling the ref to do a normal count when Sting got pinned instead of a fast count?
That one backstage shoot decision completely ruined that match and the entire buildup to it, all because Hogan didn't want to lose clean to Sting

You know what's funny?
Even if this was true, surely even you have to admit that there were much better ways to give Sting a non-clean win, besides the complete clusterfuck that ended up happening that night
Out of all the ways they could have avoided giving Sting a clean win, they chose to have Hogan technically beat him fair & square with a legdrop and REGULAR 3-count, then have Bret look stupid calling it a fast count and restarting the match with himself as the new ref, while the announcers sound confused as to why the match is restarting when Hogan clearly won clean in kayfabe
