That's because he's the greatest heel in the business. He's so good at making you believe that the babyface underdog has a real chance, and then he crushes your hopes.

"Higher-ups backstage" is codeword for TKO suits who don't understand that a crowd chanting "You tapped out" months later IS a good crowd reaction for a heel.
He's never the main star anyway. Gunther is an obstacle to overcome for new up and coming faces. Without Gunther, there would have been no Jey Uso.
After a while the game resets, Gunther gets placed back at the top as the final boss of the lesser belt, and a new up and coming talent get's a chance to get over with the crowd (this time Breakker). You need people like this in a company.

See I didn't think about it like that. He does leave a lasting effect. And I liked the Gunther and Jey matches. You think the Gunther vs Pat stuff was to show TKO he can work great with literally anyone? I don't want him in the influencers stuff.

Getting the "you tapped out" chant as a heel is a good thing. Paul knows firsthand that chant doesn't affect you in the long run though and real people who don't live on the internet have already forgotten
