Probably part of it but even blanks were over $5 around the mid 80s and movies could be $80. People mostly rented so prices were aimed at rental stores and diehard collectors. They later figured out they could make more by lowering the price and selling more volume.

Yeah true. I only said that because my uncle was a big time tape trader, and would usually charge the price of the blank plus whatever little shipping cost (or just trade for other tapes). He passed away and his entire massive tape library is just sitting rotting away in his basement, and my cunt aunt won't let me near it so I can get it archived digitally and get it on the internet...fuckin bitch.
