I still don't understand the endgame of Jey having to tap him out at Mania. That was never the story anyway and clearly the damage it's done since has far outweighed any benefit

Gunther tapped out in a bitch way too. he didn't even fight for long. Probably because he wasn't happy to do it, but it actually made it look worse. Jey had him in the hold for a second and suddenly he gives up.

They wanted to put Jey over strong and give the fans his moment and reign, all so they could end it quickly and move on. On paper, in the vacuum of that feud and match, Gunther tapping out is pretty good but of course wrestling keeps on going. Gunther has to show up again and they have to follow up his huge loss. Losing to Sami a year earlier didn't really hurt him but his WHC reign did because it was so uneventful. Him losing to Jey in such a way has REALLY hurt him, that beating Goldberg and retiring him isn't enough.
