Am I missing something with modern booking? Why would I bother to watch Sheamus vs Rusev when I know 1. Neither guy will be world champion again 2. Neither guy has character 3. There's no story or consequence to the match 4. Neither guy is involved in an angle 5. I've already seen this match multiple times back when both guys were younger and better 6. They just had a match a few weeks ago

Are you me? I had these same exact thoughts when I was watching that match. Both men are old and washed up, just either go out on your back and retire, or get rapackaged. As much as people bitched about Edge becoming an occultist, at least he tried doing something new.

And then the show opens and closes with major angles so you get to see Roman, or Punk, or Seth, or Gunther and catch the latest chapter. They use that to build a framework for everything else.
