You don't realize just how big of a deal pro wrestling has been around the world throughout modern history until you start interacting with art from those days and catch the references to it that pop up here and there. Bigger than Boxing. It's a damn shame that there isn't enough available footage prior to the television age, let alone high quality footage of full matches in true carnivalesque events.
I was watching Jean Vigo's L'Atalante, a 1934 film, and was surprised to see a scene where one of the characters was mimicking a chain-wrestling sequence with armbars and neck bridges.
