You don't realize just how big of a deal pro wrestling has been around the world throughout modern history until you start interacting with art from those days and catch the references to it that pop up here and there. Bigger than Boxing. It's a damn shame that there isn't enough available footage prior to the television age, let alone high quality footage of full matches in true carnivalesque events.
I was watching Jean Vigo's L'Atalante, a 1934 film, and was surprised to see a scene where one of the characters was mimicking a chain-wrestling sequence with armbars and neck bridges.
Also general pre-WW2 wrestling history thread.

The other day I was watching an old movie and there was a scene where the main characters go to a wrestling show.
One of the characters joked about wrestling being rehearsed.
The other character said goodbye to a wrestler in the middle of a match and the wrestler stopped selling to say goodbye back.

France in particular had a real big wrestling scene. Andre's stardom isn't anecdotal. It's a real shame to see just how inexistent it has become, even in the indies. The last thing I've heard about from there was when ospreay wrestled for newly formed Rixe prior to joining AEW, but haven't seen anything about it since then.
Funnily enough, they still have an archaic wrestling scene in Senegal. It's pretty rad, and it seems to continue to draw large crowds to this day.

I legit have no idea what happened to France's scene for it to basically disappear altogether, haven't researched it one bit but wrestling is effectively dead here, relegated to a niche hobby where you watch american stuff and regular people look at you kinda weird if you mention it
There's a rabid fanbase tho, atmosphere at Backlash at Lyon was fucking insane, and Clash in paris will be too imo, but no local feds and no mainstrem media presence it's very strange
I'm certain a small fed running small towns on the regular could draw if it doesn't focus on big cities right away
