Because it was time for the heel to drop the title and he was the hottest babyface whose storyline made the most sense to be the one dethroning the heel champ. But he's once again one of those champs like Sting and Eddie Guerrero where they're more over in the chase than they are holding the belt, so it's probably better if his reign isn't too long and he drops the belt to another heel soon-ish.
