How come Jim Cornette complains so much about "exposing the business" when he worked for a guy that went out on TV and admitted wrestling is fake to all of his fans?

Also how did the industry react to this at the time?

Nobody cared because kayfabe has been dead since the beginning. Cornette still hangs onto it because he's a goofball contrarian. Imagine his reaction if WWE or AEW booked a Ninja Turtle or a Mummy. But according to Cornette, it was okay for him to do it.

Corny has lamented Vince many times for his shitty booking and "sports entertainment"-fying the sport. At the same time, Corny likes Vince for some reason so he gives him a break

"Exposing the business" can also refer to showing the audience how much of it is scripted and cooperative and breaking the 4th wall, and audience immersion to what is happening. That is what Kayfabe protectors are ultimately more worried and invested in.
Generally you want your actors to sell a story of being hit to the face by another hurting and that whatever bracelet they are fighting over is worth hitting the other guy in the head with a toolbox with and that the hit seemed impactful in a way that a person watching it doesn't want to jump in and ask for them to be hit believing that the other guy didn't hit for real.

This applies to watching movies and other tv, you don't want to see the wires or think what's CGI in what shot, preferably, because that distracts from the emotional side of the story and your investment in the characters.
However, It's a weird dance between what is acceptable and what is not when moves like Old School, Flair flop, Hulking up are considered normal but doing consecutive Canadian destroyers is shit wrestling and tied to the wrestlers, the wrestlers previous exposure to the audience, the venue its being performed in etc etc.

So called true Kayfabe could not have survived over 2004 and 21 years past it due to internet so there is no point on wondering if Vince breaking it in 2025 would shock anyone.

It's not about people knowing or not knowing it's fake (people have known wrestling was fake pretty much from the start), it's because the post-2000's complete total death of kayfabe has been accompanied by indie shit (eg, the doll match) or retarded shit (syringes, pizza cutter) that kills the BUSINESS because people stop caring.
It's like having a TV show where every episode the lead actors go off the script and start bringing up real life shit, using real names, reminding the audience that it's a fake TV Show, referencing things their characters wouldn't know or deliberately doing stupid shit to break the illusion.

Honestly Corny kinda fries Vince whenever he can in a weird way Corny is a text book case of a guy born in the wrong time he is a guy that should have been born 20 years earlier and he would have thrived and would have been the happiest guy of all time living the wrassling dream as it where but he kinda came in at the tail end of the golden years of Kayfabe he had a good run I think and his podcast is great I love hearing the old stories from the territory days.

He doesn't mind people knowing the inside angles and the goings on behind the scenes.
He has a problem with the curtain being pulled on live TV as part of the show, especially when what's then shown is also worked.
Every time you do this, you're making it more difficult for people to immerse themselves in what they're presented with, which means you don't retain your audience and lose ticket sales.
For all the overness of the WWE of the past few years, they sure show a drastic drop in viewership figures ever since going to Netflix.
That trend is still on the decline.
Now you can look at the houses and say there's no problem at all because the houses are full, and you can watch the sideshows like Unreal and think that everything's great because that's what you're shown.
Raw should not be doing 1,4 milly worldwide just 6 months after averaging 2,5 milly in the states alone.
You're gonna see this in the houses as well when people have maxed out their credit cards and can't afford to go anymore. Remember that we're in a post-lockdown entertainment boom where people spend money they don't have to see a show before the gouvernment takes that right away again.

Wrestling declining in popularity has nothing to do with whatever bullshit Jim makes up. The Attitude Era was an anomaly and it was never going to last. The Attitude Era also never pretended it was real, and Beyond the Mat and Wrestling with Shadows came out during it, Outside of that, right now wrestling is healthier than it has been in decades because there's two major companies that still sell tickets.

Jim is a dumb boomer

Think of the numbers here.
An 8,6 million drop in live viewers, while attendance went up to 50k from 25k.
That's 25000 more ticket sales, and -8600000 live viewers.

Don't forget WWF/E used to run 250-300 house shows a year. That's a lot of ticket sales and eyes on the product.

Boomers are doing the math.

If a live viewer is worth $60 for 3 hours of advertisable content, and there are 8600000 less viewers, that's a loss of $516 million per show.
Tickets went from averaging $200 to $1000, so at 25k attendance that's from 5 million to 25 million dollars, and doubling that gets you 50 million at the gate.
That's still $466 million LESS than they've lost in ad revenue.

Are you fucking joking me? They made so much money they might as well have had a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Especially during WM 17 which is considered mount everest for wrestling. God you modern wrestling fans are such fags, you think singing in an arena and spamming finishers for 30 minutes is proof wrestling is doing good.
