In the 80s and 90s the Americans were always portrayed as fun, happy, and "liberal" in a classic sense, or libertarian. While foreigners were portrayed as strict, cold, overly serious nationalistic types. That was the common trope, no matter if the foreigner was a Russian or a Canadian.
