That's what AEW has been since day one. Tony Khan is fundamentally incapable of running a wrestling company. He has a lot of money to hire a lot of good wrestlers, but the talented roster is the only thing AEW has going for it.

I’ve been saying this for years, there is no sense of placement of wrestlers, low card guys go 50-50 with people on top of the card. Jobbers shouldn’t be having competitive matches with top guys and this happens regularly on AEW

One of the best examples is little Danny Garcia. I personally don’t think he’s all that great. But you definitely don’t feel a sense of progression in him as a character when he beats Bryan Danielson when’s both have 50/50 matches with everyone on the roster. It just makes Danielson feel as weak as him. In a sense, that is just as much the talents’ fault as it is Tony’s. All Japan and NOAH have plenty of examples of matches that display a kayfabian hierarchy that go 10 minutes. But the talent doesn’t have the know how or confidence to work like that and have the misguided conception that these matches make everyone look good instead of making the bigger star seem ineffective.
The kind of match that works 8 times a year for smarks buying DVDs doesn’t work on a supposedly narrative driven weekly show. There are different expectations.
It’s why those ROH shows on HDnet were so weird. You’d get a big match that would normally be used to sell a dvd and a bunch of stuff that didn’t feel like ROH.

While attendance and ratings have always sucked at least the shows were still good to a point. Seems they gave up somewhere around the summer and the quality has just been dogshit now too

It got better in mid-to-late '23 because of Christian's TNT run, which brought some focus and cohesion to the shows after Punk's departure. He did great stuff with Darby, Danielson, and Copeland. Thank you. I have been saying this for months. It was like Tony booked All In to be the series finale of AEW and everything after has just been meaningless filler ever since. Hangman is a mid champ on his own but not booking him any decent feuds has really exposed him. All the stories revolve around babyfaces fighting one of the two heel factions. In WWF, Austin and Rock weren't wrestling lower tier dudes until 2000. When Triple H lost to Jericho, it was for a storyline purpose.
You never saw Austin in 97 go 20 minutes with with Bart Gunn.

Also, in both promotions, the average match length was like 3-5 minutes.

At no point during the attitude era did WWE only have 2 hours.

They had 2 hour of Raw, an hour of Heat and/or an hour of Shotgun Saturday Night and two hours of Smackdown.

Shotgun became irrelevant after Heat
Heat being irrelevant after Smackdown

But Raw + SD are the same number of hours. Somehow, Raw led into Smackdown and vice versa, giving the shows importance. Why can't AEW do that?
