As a whole yes it largely felt like Xbox dominated gen 7 because all your friends and everyone had Xbox’s, but later in the generation Sony started pulling away and rode that momentum into the 8th gen, and here we are now. Sony and Nintendo at the top of the mountain and Microsoft basically becoming a third party publisher

All 3 companies do that. They hope that whoever buys a console will buy enough games to make the money back. That strategy doesn't work for Xbox because they put all of their games on pc so there's no point to having an xbox unless that's what your friends play. Also starting with the ps4 generation most people bought their games digitally, so when the ps5 came out people stuck with playstation because that's where their game library is. So because nobody bought an xbox one nobody bought the new one
