Yep, I use ffmpeg. I like:
ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -c:v libvpx -c:a libvorbis -crf {value between 4 - 63} -b:v 2000K (lower as needed) -vf scale={resolution-width}:-1 -an video.webm
yt-dlp should work better than wget though because video sites often have all sorts of things to trip people up who try to download stuff.

agreed. yt-dlp also lets you pass ffmpeg commands in as part of its api with --postprocessor-args. ive used that to clip some stuff for webmbros thread before, its a nice feature

ffmpeg was just one of those things I never fully appreciated before I started posting here. I'm not an expert but I've become fairly proficient at trying to maximize video quality and length while keeping it under 4096kb.
Sort of like a little game I play.

Every time I save an image, I go to the image folder, close my eyes, open them, and when I see the image being a teeny bit blurry, that means I have to do the usual “edit the pic” move like cropping. It’s like gambling. I never know if I get a normal pic or a webp.

70% of the time it’s a webp anyways so then I just take a screenshot and do it that way.

depending on who you ask, nothing. it can be better in terms of filesize for most images, but its not as big as google has pretended it is. the lack of backwards compatibility and google forcing it into image search before most users and websites had any ability to actually use the shit just pissed everyone off. even if it were the greatest image compression format possible, google fucked it up

google bought a compression company, failed to get anyone to use their video codec and reacted seemingly out of spite by forcing the image compression version. i dont know the webp license but id assume they get some money from big companies like adobe or akamai for the libraries as well
