For generations, the Kingdom of Lindan has been under siege by an otherworldly threat. One that with naught but a wave of the hand can level entire cities. Demons from Earth plague the land and wreak havoc wherever they go. They hail from a barbarous and most unusual land and possess skills that defy all magic, science, and logic. Known as Cheat Skills, these abilities let the Strangers from Earth gain extraordinary power without any effort. As such, each and every one of these Strangers has the capability to bring on the end of all times should they desire. Yet, despite the insurmountable threat the Strangers possess, the Goddess’ Inquisition has sent these beasts back each and every time. A thankless job that has seen these heroes who exist above the law become more reviled than praised, but a job that is nonetheless required for the future existence of Lindan.

You are one of these Inquisitors. Well, kind of. You are Lorina de Lindan, third to the throne of Lindan and the Imperial Princess, and you are most well-known for being dumped in such a scandal that you were all but ejected from the Royal Mageknight Academy. There was an honor duel involved and everything. It was very serious. Because of all that, you’ve found yourself skulking in the basement of the best friend to the adulterous foreign prince who hated you so. It’s a long story.

Each step the two figures take down the stairway sends a flutter to your heart. You can feel your body tense before the coming of a fight. You know why, of course, this is a fight you want to have. You’ve been waiting to wipe the smug grin off his face for years. Always belittling your achievements, undermining your decisions as student council president, and, you’ve learned from Cathrine, all those times he’d pretend to be your friend for a while was so he could distract you while your betrothed consorted with another woman. A commoner! An insult to so much more than just your pride.

But despite your body's cry for battle, nor how much you want to spring from your position and deal with this traitor, you don’t. Unlike some you may be acquainted with, certainly not naming names, you understand the pragmatism of using a subtler method of approach. With one quick and fluid motion, you grab both your bodyguard and maid, Alyssa, and the other maid you’ve recently conscripted, Rory. As you look at the long-skirted maid's dress you’re wearing yourself as the three of you tumble to the ground, you notice how much maids have been on the mind today. You dash the thought as your hand flies up and waves the mana flowing through your fingertips like paint, and the illusion of a crate conjures itself up around the three of you. In a room filled with similar boxes and a singular dissimilar casket, your disguise should raise no alarms, and its translucent interior should provide adequate benefit. Still, as the pair takes the last steps into the basement, your concentration on them takes over everything.

“Now, do you remember what you need to get?” Percival asks the hooded man.

“The purple crystals and flowers, right?” Replies the deep-voiced man. From the waver in his voice, you instantly get the impression of an impolite man trying his best to reverse his nature.

“And the embalming tools,” Percy says in a tsk, “Honestly, how can your kind claim to be rightful masters of the world while lacking even basic knowledge of occultic magic? Good sir, you must understand that is quite the embarrassment!” His tone of voice is about at the maximum level of passive-aggressiveness that a noble gentleman's club would allow. You would say such a remark like that was uncalled for, but you have known Peryc long enough to know that’s simply how he is.

“My Lord, was Joseph not just mourning over the loss of our last?” The man says in an attempt at a retort. The name Joseph catches your attention even more. That's the name of the Heaven Society's leader, meaning this hooded figure is most likely a member as well. If only there were such a device to record this very conversation as proof of Percy working with the secretive Stranger organization.

“The last occultist your society had died like a dog to a mob of villagers when faced with fending off a singular inquisitor!” Percy stresses before forcing himself to calm down, “But I digress. Simply help me get what I require for the rituals, and we'll head back to the old battlefield.”

“Fair enough, Sir.” The older-sounding man says before shaking his head in exasperation once Percy turns around to unlock the armory.

Neither of them heads anywhere close to your direction, and you allow yourself to relax once you fully lose sight of the bloody bastard and his current lackey. The first thing you notice is how cramped the three of you are together; you all resemble more of a mass of limbs than three separate people. Then you feel, not see, the reactions of the others. Alyssa is as disciplined as she ever is, with her chest breathing in an almost too regular rhythm and the complete opposite of Rory, who is merely a step away from hyperventilation. If you move out of your position, you might compromise the illusion or, at the very least, draw attention to yourselves. But there’s also no reason not to remind Percival who the better mageknight was at the Academy now that you’re absolutely certain he’s a heretic, but for that, you’ll need to untangle yourself.

No problem. I've certainly had games that did that to me, mainly Fallout and Dark Souls. I still need to complete Elden Ring and it's DLC before Nightreign comes out. I kinda stopped after I hit the wall called Malenia...

Despite the part of you screaming to punch Percy in his extremely punchable face, you quiet down your inner urge for combat and sit and observe, for you reckon not everything needs a reaction. Not yet in any case. For the next few minutes, the two suspects go about their business in silence, neither deeming to speak to each other, and that allows you time to think. From the short conversation earlier, you got the impression that neither Percy nor the Stranger seems to like each other, so you wonder why they would be collaborating? You can only think that they must have some shared goal in mind, which seems at odds with the Heaven Societies' stated purpose of turning your world into a playground for Strangers, a Heaven for them if you want to be on the nose about it. But how would that benefit Percy or the Bloodgraves? Do Lord and Lady Bloodgrave even know about this? You have so many questions but so few answers, but by now you’ve learned that is par for the course with being a member of the Inquisition, where everyone seems to know everything but you. It almost makes you feel like a detective, like in the popular novels “The Strange Adventures of Herlock Sholmes.” Almost.

“I’ve finished in here. How goes your search?” Percy calls out from the armory.

“Just getting the last things. What exactly are the embalming tools again?” The man yells back, to which an exasperated sigh echoes off the stone walls.

“I’ll show you, just hurry up with everything else I want to get out of here as soon as we can,” Percy responds as you hear him begin to walk towards the hooded man. Damn it! You thought they’d start their ritual in this creepy basement, not leave! This calls for drastic measures…

“Rory, say something.” You whisper-yell to the woman beside you.

“W-what? What do I say?” She manages to respond despite herself. It almost looks like she’s on the verge of crying. You cannot tell why that might be.

“Anything!” You yell in the loudest quiet voice you can make.

“Uh, anything!” She blurts out, but it's good enough. You grab hold of her neck, near where her voice comes from, and weave magic through the air once again. A vocal illusion plays near the top of the stairs. First, it sounds as if a door opens, and a voice similar to Rory’s own screams, “MASTER PERCIVAL! Come quickly! There’s a situation with your father, an emergency!” Then the door slams shut. Though, of course, the door never actually moved, and Rory never said those words. You did.

“Curses, what is it now?” Percival exclaims, “Akari, stay here. I will deal with this, then return for you.” He continues in a tone that brooks no argument, which is good, seeing as it never comes as the hooded man waits in silence as Percy storms up the stairs to check on his father. Something that will drastically shorten your time here for when he barges into his parents' room and sees them beaten and unconscious, it would probably be best if you’re long gone.

I really want to get back to Percy's bedroom to steal that portrait, but Akari should be enough proof to bring the hammer down to and have the guards find it.

As Percival climbs the stairs, you reach into the folds of your dress and pull out a peculiar item. You’ve been instructed on how to use it before your arrival at the mansion, so you simply raise a segmented antenna and turn a few shockingly smooth dials. Then, as Percival closes the door behind him, you force an armor stand behind the armory's bars to clatter to the ground. It has the intended effect.

“What was that?” The hooded man says before moving over to investigate.

Good. Anyway, the rectangular device in your hand can be used to communicate with others by magically transforming your voice into waves picked up by the other person’s device? That’s at least as much as you remember from the strangetech supplier. Normally, telepathy is a rather hard magic to master, and yet to do it so easily… Your noblesse oblige demands you spread this technology across Lindan, imagine what such technology can revolutionize! Yet, your duty demands that you keep such a miracle secret. For the safety of all, only Inquisitors can use such miracles lest we be corrupted by their barbaric savagery. That’s not really the case, though, is it? After all, you’re asking one of those same savages for help now.

“See you in a bit, over.” You say before collapsing the walkie-talkie’s antenna. It’s pretty archaic technology compared to your old phone, but it makes you feel like you’re playing Metal Gear again, so you don’t mind too much. It does kinda suck that Lori called you right as you were starting to get comfortable on the idyllic hill you found but you’ve been hoping for some action all day.

The manor is only a hop, skip, and jump away, and before you know it, your first forces itself against the door as obnoxiously as you can make it. When a disheveled white-haired man opens the door, you don’t even allow him to make a snide remark before you proclaim, “Surprise inspection! This manor is suspect of consorting with Strangers, seeing as it has not been targeted in the recent attack!”

“By what right-?” The man arrogantly tries to ask, but you rightfully cut him off.

“On my authority as an Inquisitor.” You say with a quick flash of your medallion as you push your way inside. A few of the rather large group of servants in the entrance hall turn and see your blatant disregard for the doorman. “Now, I’ve also heard a story about how this family helped gang up on the princess, so I expect you all to be more than accommodating for my search!”

“Is that supposed to be a threat, inquisitor?” The doorman says, barely containing his rage, forming a rather ugly expression on his face.

“I think so.” You state with cocky certainty. “And I demand to be shown around this manor. You, doorman, will assist me in this!”

“D-doorman? I shall have you know that on my honor as-”

“Yes, whatever.” You say with a yawn, “Now-”

You were tasked by Lorina to make as much of a distraction as possible, how do you plan to do that?

“By my rights as an inquisitor, I demand to be shown this entire mansion, uh,” You stutter for a bit thinking of a suitable Lorina-like word, “Posthaste!” Right, yeah, that should do it.

The doorman is completely stunlocked by how much you couldn’t care less about his whining about cliche shit like, “The nerve!” and “Do you even know where you are?!” he even pulls a “My father will hear of this!” before storming off up the main stairs. But he does not go down to the basement, so you let him leave before drawing everyone's attention. It seems expensive-looking vases are rather fragile. You wouldn’t have known seeing as the most expensive thing you ever owned was your shitty handmedown laptop.

”Are you not forgetting someone?

You don’t think so, no.

Anyway, you’re so captivating that for minutes, a group of about a dozen or so serving staff spend their time politely trying to inform you “that’s not allowed,” instead of anything more productive with their time, as you do nothing but turn a few valuable decorations into historical relics. Honestly, they should be thanking you, once these are in museums in a couple centuries they’ll be considered invaluable. Or wait, maybe if they don’t have a value, they’d be considered less valuable? That’s not how that works though, right?

After a bit, a few guards rush over to you, but they are thoroughly repelled by nothing more than a flash of your badge and a gesture to your sword. It’s kinda embarrassing if you’re being honest. Sure, you don’t want to actually have to fight them. Still, they seem to fold so easily when considering your possibility of being an inquisitor. Do people really fear us that much? You don’t really see why they would. All you’ve ever seen the Inquisition do is help people. Though, if you were the noble guy living here, you’d fire these cowardly normies instantly.

“Who in the Goddess’ name do you think you are!?” Cries an enraged voice from where the doorman went and- oh shit he looks just like him. By that, you mean two doormen come down the stairs, with one simply looking like an older and larger version with a swollen eye and a cut lip. You’re at least smart enough to realize you were antagonizing the noble’s kid. Wait, then isn’t he one of the boys who spent his time picking on Lorina in school?

Based. You should bother him some more.

“An inquisitor, don’t see why a doorman's father needs to know.” You say with flagrant dismissal before pointing towards the noble kid, “You. Tell me where all the secret passages are.”

“What secret passages?” He says in disbelief before catching up with himself, “Wait, I am not a-!” But you cut him off.

“Of course, there are secret passages! This is a rich nobleman’s house, why wouldn’t there be secret passageways?! It’s like basically a requirement, you know? How else is the bad guy supposed to escape near the end of the episode?”

“End of the what?” The noble kid says before the actual lord storms his way over to you, red-faced. To anyone else, he’d make an intimidating sight, a well-built man about the same height as Asher, so a good fifty centimeters or so taller than you. However, you present yourself as thoroughly unamused to make a rather comedic sight for the staff bystanders.

“Perhaps you should do more research into the ‘rich noblemen’ whose houses you trespass! For I am Lord-” You can kinda draw a basedjak outline of his face in your head if you try hard enough.

“Yeah, yeah, I know.” You wave him off, “Just messing with you, big guy.”

His face gets even redder. “What sort of game is this?! First, you assault me, then you waltz around like you own the place, then blatantly lie to my face? Is the Lord Inquisitor behind this or… wait, your face.”

“My face?”

“From which land do you hail, ‘Inquisitor?’” He says with remarkable calmness as his face turns back to its normal color.

“Uh, Lindan of course?”

“Your skin and eyes are of a kind I’ve never seen before.” He states with some authority. Doesn’t he know you’re not supposed to talk to about someone like that? “One of the first things to look for when searching for a Stranger.” There’s a collective gasp from the peanut gallery.

Oh, shit. You always kind of expected a problem like this would come up eventually. The only thing is, how do you worm your way out of this one?

“Are you stupid or something?” You condescend, “Of course, I look like a Stranger, it’s by far the easiest way to get one of them to drop their guard. Guess I forgot how magic is considered child's play to the inquisition might confuse those less magically inclined.”

Bloodgrave Sr looks like he’s about to pop a blood vessel in the red square-like mark that appeared on his forehead. “I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class-”

“Yeah, sure, you peaked in high school, whatever. Heard enough about that from my dad-”

“Is your purpose here just to heckle us?” Bloodgrave Jr, “Because I believe we have much more important concerns at present than whatever unicornshit reason you have for being here. Besides, how can you even be an Inquisitor when you don’t even look older than I?”

You flash the medallion again, making sure all the gawkers in the back can see but not so long anyone can read it, “Whatever business you may think you have is irrelevant as of right now. I am Inquisitor Sarodieu, and your family is officially under investigation under suspicion for conspiracy with Strangers from another world.”

“What is the meaning of this?” The Duke says simply in a more subdued tone, but with a hard edge to his voice. He’s probably realized that he isn’t going to get out of this through simple intimidation of a girl five times his junior. Sorry for him, but you’re a Heroine in a shounen and not one from an NTR doujin.

“Hm, if you’ve stopped being confused about what’s happening here let us continue. Your son here is quite well known for his role in the recent scandal at eh MageKnight Academy, where he, along with multiple other influential noble heirs and a few foreign ones, plotted to humiliate Her Highness the Royal Princess in a rather eccentric fashion. Each member of this conspiracy has an estate in the capital which has recently been the subject of a raid by strange forces; however, each estate housing an heir linked to this humiliation plot has not been targeted.”

“That is absurd!” The Duke yells, “There are so many other reasons why my home might not have been targeted! Has the Inquisition even considered that perhaps its locations outside city bounds are to play or that this is merely a diversion you’ve all fallen for?!”

“We have considered all plausible scenarios. That is why I appeared at your doorstep as an investigator, and you didn’t open your door to an entire legion of knights.” As you say that the Duke seems to calm down somewhat, very susceptible to a nice cop, it seems, though his son looks to be more on guard than ever, though he tried to hide that under a poker face. Does he not realize that turning your face into an impenetrable mask of neutrality practically screams that he’s hiding something? A good liar would actually have at least some faux emotions.

“Now, why don’t the two of you give me a tour of this estate? How about we start upstairs?

“Goddess, oh beloved Goddess,” Rory says as she hugs herself in the corner as Alyssa finishes the final knots on the rope tying the Stranger to one of the stone pillars in the basement. Seems whatever his Cheat Skill is, it didn’t stop him from being ambushed by two experienced fighters, seeing as he went down after the first couple of blows. He went down rather hard, actually. You almost felt bad when his face took on an expression of shock mixed with terror.

That’s a lie, you didn’t feel bad at all.

“He is secure,” Alyssa says before stepping back, allowing you to loom intimidatingly over the unconscious man. Like many Strangers you’ve seen, he looks similar to Marie, or you suppose Midori, so from what you’ve learned, he most likely has come from the Kingdom of Japan, though instead of being a girl your junior, he looks to be well into his middle age. Or you suppose that if he’s not cooperative, he is approaching his final age, but that remains to be seen. “What is your next move?” Alyssa says as she raises a hand holding a patch of herbs she found in the storage room, it should wake up the man immediately if rubbed under his nose. But do you wish to question him now?

>Yes, of course [What do you ask/tell the Stranger?]

>No, let’s bring him back to the Cathedral

If we can let the Inquisition know we found both a Stranger and a witness so they can send in the knights to go over the mansion, that'd be great. If they only can take the Stranger right now, I'd like to hand him off, then go inside the mansion and open up that closet with the portrait so Lorina can do both a dramatic reveal and have reasonable evidence for the royal knights to start going through the mansion. And if they are unable to do a quick handoff nearby and need us to bring the Stranger to the Cathedral directly, put him in the coffin and take him back, the name on it should be another clue.

“Put him in the coffin.” You command to which the maid, who isn’t currently having a panic attack, oblidges. You wish you could stay and have a suitably dramatic reveal of the picture or go back up and do something, but you can hear the noises of dozens of footfalls above you. Knowing Marie’s boisterous nature and her penchant for humor you know this “bit” as she calls them, could go on for hours with her never losing steam, and that means for the rest of the day, even after she departs, this estate will see more activity than a beehive who had three wasps intrude on their domain. Your best move here is to make a tactical retreat and regroup. You have enough information that could lead to the fall of one of the most influential noble houses in Lindan, perhaps it would be best to go to safety and think about what your next move should be.

“It is done,” Alyssa says before kneeling down and lifting the large coffin over her shoulder. You nod in acknowledgement before looking toward Rory.

“There should be an exit that leads somewhere outside,” She says through her hand, having covered her mouth after dry retching.

You don’t say anything as you go about looking for it. Instead, you call or you suppose “buzz” Marie three times with the walkie-talkie, a code to let her know you’re leaving the premises. You wish that Beneger had given you equipment that could communicate with more than just Marie. How nice it would be to instantly let the Lord Inquisitor know of the rot here at this house, but alas, technology like that exists only in the realm of fantasy. Or perhaps a storage room with a strict guard patrol. You suppose it doesn’t matter, you have to work with what you have in this life.

Regardless, you find a spiral staircase in an abandoned corner and take its cobweb-laden stairs to an outside exit. With everyone inside so preoccupied by the yelling you can fear flowing from a cracked window, the three of you manage to commandeer one of the estate's groundkeepers' wagons and make your way to the cobble streets of the exburb close by. It’s a march that happens in silence, Alyssa is ever quiet, Rory is having a crisis, and you’re too lost in thought to speak. The silence is only made comfortable when Marie meets you outside the pub, you’ve been waiting with an all-too-smug smile on her face. Then she’s more than happy to fill the social void with a dramatic reenactment of everything she put Percy and his father through as she behaved like a wyvern in an alchemy shop during the hour-or-so she “investigated” the Bloodgrave’s Capital Estate.

She even managed to get a giggle out of Rory and a smile from Alyssa when she spoke of how she spent fifteen minutes getting Lord Bloodgrave to describe the purpose of a potted plant. Apparently, it is because it “looks nice.”

You got quite a few strange looks from the commoners and lower nobility as the four of you marched through the main street, having a beautiful woman in a maid outfit dragging a wagon with a “corpse” in it tends to do that, you suppose. Doubly so when the coffin bangs every now and then, but a flash of the medallion keeps anyone from asking questions, even when three of you are wearing maid outfits. Thank the Goddess for illusionary hair dye. Not even the guards ask too many questions, though you make certain to avoid anywhere that Royal Guards might lurk. With the amount of detours you have to take, what should be only a few hours walk takes until almost nightfall. Not your most glamorous moment, oh, how your followers back in the Academy would laugh if they saw you now. But you can’t bring yourself to care, you’re still riding the high the investigation gave you. It’s not every day a lady gets to catch a break this big. I mean, sure, you’ve fantasized that the creep from your school days was an evil psychopath earthbent on your destruction, but for that to be a reality? The stars must have aligned for you.

So you do what anyone would after a long and arduous day and indulge yourself in your satisfaction and coast through the return to the Cathedral, the putting of Rory in what Asher or Marie would describe as “witness protection,” the dropping off of the casket in the alien basement, and the lengthy explaination you give Beneger and the Lord Iqnuisitor with Maire by your side and Alyssa standing ever-vigilant behind you.

“I told you she was a good pick,” The Lord Inquisitor says with a similar air of satisfaction, as if he’s done anything but sit on his fat behind, to Lord Beneger, who stands at the opposite end of the long table you, Marie, and the Lord Inquisor sit at.

The old man ignores him, “This seems almost too good to be true. If you didn’t have the reputation you have, I’d wager you were a liar, Your Highness.” You do not preen at the praise, you do not, “But I’ll leave all that hogwash for the shower tonight.”

“High praise,” The Lord Inquisitor comments.

Lord Beneger clicks his tongue, “The facts of the matter is you’re the only group of investigators I’ve sent out that have found any lead. More than that, you’ve found a clear connection between the Bloodgraves and Heaven Society, captured a Stranger alive, and discovered a motive for at least the heir to the family. It is quite easy to assume why Lord and Lady Bloodgrave would assist in this as well, that is assuming they are aware of their son's activities. This is good work.”

“Buuuuuuut?” The Lord Inquisitor chimes in.

“But, due to your brazen methods, we have to act fast; it’s unlikely that the Bloodgraves will still be in the capital come tomorrow’s night. It’s doubtful that they know exactly what is going on, but they know something is happening. And if they have deep ties with a Stranger cult, then they know their only hope for survival may be rebellion. The Bloodgraves are a strong house due to the size of their lands, but if we manage to nip this in the bud, then the patriarch's extended family are unlikely to support their cause. Whatever we do here, we must do it fast.”

“Woah, so we’re going to be saving the entire country?!” Marie excitedly blurts out, causing Beneger to make a sour face, “That’s awesome! I had no idea the stake would get high so fast!”

“The pacing tends to be fast around here,” The Lord Inquisitor acquiesces.

“Please do not interrupt my father,” Alyssa whispers to Marie, well, she tries to whisper, but her monotone voice keeps her voice from falling too low. An issue she only picks up when outside of a mission.

“He just finished talking, that’s the perfect time for an excited exclamation!”

Alyssa blinks, “Is it?” She asks, genuinely curious.

“Alright!” You exclaim, but not excitedly, instead with a more mature descriptive word like determinedly, “What are our options here?” You ask.

“We contact your parents and surround the estate with the man-at-arms they’ve raised to deal with the riots.” The Lord Inquisitor says immediately.

You feel a gut reaction to scream “NO!” And deny this, but you manage to stop yourself. You see the merits of this, sure it would lead to a dramatic duel like Marie wants, but the Bloodgraves barely keep any guards, and certainly not enough to fight hundreds of the Royal Guard. All it would take is you having a rather uncomfortable conversation you’ve been running from.

“Or we could interrogate the Stranger you’ve captured and deal with the Heaven Society first and foremost. The Bloodgraves may pose a threat to the Kingdom, but we are not protectors of the Kingdom; we are protectors of the Goddess’ world.” Beneger says.

Another good point, while your noblesse oblige demands you have a duty to the Kingdom, technically, you have other obligations too. You know more about this world than perhaps you ever wished to know, and that means you understand the danger that the Heaven Society poses. Even if they are just a bunch of losers like the ones you’ve seen so far, losers with the power to destroy the world at their fingertips is a frightening combination.

To say there was never a doubt in your mind would be a lie. No matter how much of you insisted that, above all else, your family needed your help, there was still a nagging part of you saying you were making the wrong choice. That, above all else, dealing with the Strangers took priority. Perhaps that just shows how far you’ve come. Nevertheless, you’re still you, Lorina de Lindan, third heir to the throne and Royal Princess. You have a duty to your people, and seeing this land face a civil war would be a failure of the highest order to this duty. You simply will not allow it.

Neither the Lord Inquisitor nor Lord Beneger is surprised by your answer, which honestly makes your whole internal democracy thing rather embarrassing. You’re not easy to read or anything, right? For some reason, you see Marie make a pitying smile and nod. Whatever could that be for?

“You should leave tonight. The sooner the family drama is concluded, the sooner the knights can be mounted.” Beneger says as he rises from his seat across the table and begins to pace to the room.

“Sooounds like you have this mundane business covered,” The Lord Inquisitor says as he, too, rises from his chair, with great effort, and walks toward the door. “Ta-ta!” He says with a slight wag of his fingers, a highly impolite form of wave, and exits. You nor anyone else make any move to stop him. Since you decided not to focus on dealing with the Strangers, it's likely he is going to do so himself. Though you won't lie, it feels rather liberating to have him simply accept your choice and depart rather than second-guessing you. Something your father can't seem to do enough.

Beneger just shakes his head, “What matters now is how you intend to get into the castle.”

“The front door would be the fastest route, no?” Marie blurts out, causing the standing man to sneer.

“I agree,” You quickly interject. “ I’d be escorted immediately to my father or to my room, but regardless, I’d be speaking to him rather soon.”

“And who do you intend to take with you? I doubt that His Majesty would appreciate being in the presence of the Stranger he believes to be corrupting you nor the spy who helped you escape his custody.”

That is… A rather good question. Your father isn't likely to be happy to see Marie or Alyssa. However, you could always simply disregard this advice to prove your independence to him. It would be no one’s decision but your own to bring your friends with you for support. Or you could have yourself escorted by Lord Beneger. Though you’ve never studied the Beneger line extensively, you know it to be nothing but a minor barony. The individual before you seems to have garnered much more clout through his work with the Inquisitor than he truly should have access to through his birth, and having a wisened member of the Inquisition back your claims goes far in helping you. Or, perhaps the riskiest option of them all, you could go alone. While you’d likely have nothing more than a letter from Lord Beneger vouching for your claims against the Bloodgraves, you’d appear much less disarming and more reasonable to your family. However, this could also backfire if you’re not charismatic enough. They’d simply imprison you in your room again refusing to listen until it’s far too late.

The atmosphere of the adventurer’s guilds was much nicer than the last time you visited in the dead of night, though you wouldn’t go so far as to say it wasn’t tense. The plan you laid out with Lord Beneger was certainly a risky one, but you have hope it’ll all work out in the end. Really hope is the only thing you can do at present, and that makes you anxious. Here you sit in a booth in the back corner of the guildhall. Now it’s an almost abandoned section of the building, for most here at this time of night are instead enjoying the pleasure of the tavern on the other side of the building. In fact, you see one such man, the bar-owner no less, pour two mugs of a yellow liquid down his gullet before unleashing a belch that rocks the building’s foundations while you’re stuck here with nothing but a glass of water and a leg that refuses to stop shaking.

“Where are they?” You accidentally wonder aloud as your eyes periodically dart out the dimly-lit hall's windows, half expecting to see a squadron of Royal Guards instead of your family.

“I’m sure they’ll be here soon,” Alyssa says with a comforting smile as she places a gentle hand on your shaking leg.

“Maybe this was a bad idea.” You continue.

“I wouldn’t think so. I’ve yet to see a decision you’ve made turn out for the worse instead of the better.”

“That was when we had someone with the ability to travel through time with us.”

“But you handled the Bloodgrave investigation well, no? Did you not hear the old guys when they told you?”

“Those ‘old guys’ are nobility, you should remember to treat them with respect.” You reprimand on impulse, though it is only half-hearted.

“See, that’s more like the Lorina I know!” She says as she smacks your back. Ow.

You choose not to say anything more and continue to look out the window towards the midnight streets. There are a few pedestrians still out. In a city of this size, that is one of, if not the largest, in the world, there will always be someone going about this business no matter when it is, but none have enough fanfare about them to interest you. None in the past hour you’ve sat here have. Perhaps it would be best to mentally retrace your steps, to keep your mind off things if nothing else.

A little over an hour ago, you left the cathedral with both Alyssa and Marie while a clergywoman of some renown was sent to the palace with an urgent message. That was to confirm my father's most definite suspicions were true and that you would be waiting at the adventurers' guild hall with important information regarding a stranger-backed rebellion brewing. There’s a bit more information that she’s privy to to lure your family here without storming the building with knights, but that’s not important now. Now, all you can do is pray your father’s reaction isn’t severe enough to hamper your efforts.

“They're right here, Your Highnesses.’” The voice of Clarice, the girl who set you up in the empty guildhall, brings you out of your reprieve

Turning around, you’re both shocked and surprised to see your brother accompanied by his wife walking toward you. You should have guessed your father wouldn’t dare to enter a haunt such as this. Not that long ago, you wouldn’t either. Though unlike you or him, your brother seems to be no stranger to run-down taverns filled with commoners… Perhaps that is a good trait in the crown prince.

With ease, the two of them slide into the booth across from you and your compatriots, Red with a serious and unexpressive face, a parallel to Alyssa, and your brother with a stupid-looking and dopey grin as he thanks the ex-cultist and dismisses her. Once she’s far enough away, he turns toward you, “Looks like my little sister finally entered her rebellious phase, thought it’d never happen myself!” Despite his words, you can sense no ill intent behind them.

“You owe me twenty gold.” Red states. Arthur laughs, but by her tone, you don’t think it’s a joke. Were they really betting on you?!

“Did Father send you?” You cut to the point, it’s too late to deal with your brother's buffoonery.

“Aha, about that.” Your brother says as he scratches the back of his neck, Marie nods like she just figured out something about him, “Mom and dad are still asleep, so we kinda intercepted your messenger. Relieved to find out she was telling the truth, though! Everyone’s been so worried about you recently.” You find that hard to believe, you are the most recent scandal of the family.

Red rolls her eyes, “You’re lucky we did. Doubt even with the drunk adventurers in here it’d be standin’ if he found out you were here?”

Alyssa blinks, “I don’t understand. Why would the king destroy this building if his daughter is inside?”

Red blinks back, “It’s- uh- figure o’ speech.”

Infuriatingly, both Marie and Arthur chuckle. You must separate these two as fast as possible. You do not find the thought of them being on the same “wavelength,” as Asher would put it, appealing. “Can we please get to business? This is a time-sensitive ordeal.” You all but beg.

“Sure thing, sis, though I can’t say I paid too much attention to what that priestess was saying after she mentioned where you are. So what is it exactly you wanted to tell our family?”

Holy shit this is a doozy...
>"I and Alyssa had recently infiltrated the Bloodgrave Mansion looking for possible evidence of their family working with the Heaven Society, with our partner Marie here as backup."
>"What we have discovered is that Percival at least is working with them, specifically with a Stranger by the name Akari, and that he may be doing so to get at me. I've personally seen the contents of his wardrobe, which contains a portrait of me which he uses as a dartboard."
>"Furthermore, we have in our custody a witness to both the dartboard and Percy's discussion with the Stranger, a maid by the name Rory, who I've promised to help find employment either with the Inquisition or our family for her help."
>"Finally, we have the coffin of another Heaven Society member that Marie had taken care of in a previous mission, a vampire named Morgan."
>"All in all, we believe that we have a limited window to bring the Bloodgraves into custody, before they may decide to escape or take their chances by fully supporting the Heaven Society."

>"Also, Arthur, tell Dad he needs to apologize to Asher and Marie. They've done quite a bit to prove themselves to Lindan and the Inquisition, and were better friends to me than most of my classmates. I know the Adventurer's Guild has files on it's members, you can probably ask to pull them up since Red is Adamantine rank."
>"Red, thanks again for your assistance last week. If I find out who planned the assassination attempt, I'd love to have you over when we interview them. Maybe we'll get some drinks or tea afterwards?"
>"Also, can either of you give me some advice with talking to commo- lower cl- ser- ...citizens? I believe I might have missed the etiquette lessons covering that."

Anybody have anything they want to put in or take out?

Going to just answer this out meta-wise, but Lord Bloodgrave only repeated what is "common knowledge" regarding Strangers at least for those who pay close attention when the topic is covered during mass. Otherwise, yes you do still have the maid outfit.

You leave nothing unsaid about your trip to the Bloodgrave manor. Sure, the inquisition is an organization that likes to keep its cards close to its chest, but right here? Right now? You put your entire deck on the table. You speak of how you infiltrated the manor, discovered the stabbed picture of yourself, the Stranger named Akari, and you even mentioned the outcome of the mission, including the wet-eyed commoner sleeping in a cot back in the cathedral. It’s not even just the last mission, either; you get Marie to mention her time aboard the canal boat, the coffin with a vampire's name on it. You end off your lengthy monologue by expressing how time sensitive you believe this to be before taking a sip of water to relax your dry throat. A symptom of talking for minutes nonstop.

By the end of it all, Arthur just kind of… stares at you. It almost looks as if he’s been paralyzed by the quantity of information you provided on him. On the other hand, Red nodded through the entire speech as if this was the most normal thing in the world for her. After about a minute of doing nothing but blinking, your brother responds with “I see.” And nothing else to which his wife loudly exhales.

“Is that it?” You reply, though for some reason you think you hear Marie mumble something along the lines of, “You’re one to talk.”

“I really don’t know what to say, Lorina. It seems like the last time I saw you, you still had that heartbroken yet hardened resolve about your betrothed, and now here you are speaking of treason and demons,” “Hey!” “Without a single emotion in your expression.” He then scratches the back of his head, “Eeh, you kinda remind me of those adventurers up north who talked about vanquishing world-devouring dragons as if they weren’t embellishing their tales.”

“They weren’t,” Red says.

“R-right. I see that too now.”

You quirk an eyebrow, “You think I’m lying?”

“N-no!” Your brother is quick to blubber, “It’s just a lot to process.”

“I assumed you would be quick enough to. Is that not the case?”

The tension in his shoulders slackens as he sighs, “Least I know you’re still the same Lorina.” You simply huff.

“That is not all.” You say.

“Of course it isn’t.”

“It’s mostly unrelated, don’t worry. But I want you to try to convince Father to apologize to Asher and Marie. They’ve been nothing but helpful and have verifiable evidence of their work to protect the Kingdom in their Guild files.”

“Lorina- I- I appreciate the thought, but that’s not really necessary.” Marie says, “I mean- I get it. This isn’t your average isekai fantasy, so people here have a right to be suspicious.”

“No.” You declare. “It’s not ‘okay’, you’re my friend and deserve the same accolades that I have been receiving. I won’t stand for an injustice like this.” Once you thought it unfair how Marie didn’t train for her powers like you did, but as you look at the girl only a little younger than yourself, you find those thoughts no longer ring true.

“Lorina- I- Eto… Thank you.” It's all she manages to say, but as you look at the soul behind her eyes and the soft smile on her lips, you see how she is, for lack of a more sophisticated term, very happy.

“I can probably go grab those before we leave,” Red says.

“Alright, I’ll- uh- try my best.” Arthur isn’t as determined as you are, though you doubt that’s because he doesn’t support your decision. More so because he’s the one who’ll have to sit through that conversation. You don’t feel the least bit envious about that.

“Thank you,” You say, “And thank you, Red, not just for offering to grab the files of course, that should only take a minute or two,” She does a wave of her hand that signals ‘more or less’ but doesn’t speak, “I mean for helping me escape the estate. I cannot imagine the windfall from that was pleasant,” She makes the same gesture. “Perhaps we can have tea later? As we interview whoever tried to assassinate me once I acquire them?”

“It’s a date.”

Arthur massages his forehead. “Right, we’ll, we should get going then,” He says as he rises from the booth, ‘It’s going to be a long night after all. Getting Father to remobilize the Capital should be easy enough since it- Well, it already is because of the riots. But time is of the essence!”

“Give me a second to get the stuff,” Red says before walking deeper into the guild as you and your friends also step out of the booth.

As everyone shuffles about and stretches, you manage to pull Arthur just a little bit away from the group. “Brother, I wanted to ask you something else.”

“Salvo.”

“It just- uh- after this is all over, do you think it would be possible to- to- teach me a bit about discussing with peasa- c-commonfo- serf- servan- um citizens?”

He smirks, smug, too smug for his stupid little punchable face. “Well, Lorina, I-”

“Got them,” Red shouts as she walks back toward the group.

“I’ll see what I can do.” He says sadly, before you can swipe at him.

Soon enough, they depart, and the three of you are left alone in the Guildhall wonders

Unsurprisingly, adventurers are not complicated. When a person may have many motivations in their life, you’ve found that usually one will triumph over all the rest, and in the case of the madmen whose profession is fighting near the edge of the law and civilization itself, the singular motivation that trumps all others is cold, hard, coin. It just so happens that you, Lorina de Lindan, have plenty of coins. It’s your birthright, after all, and even though with each passing day, the likelihood that you will inherit anything more than a simple estate grows smaller and smaller, you would hardly classify yourself as anything less than ludicrously wealthy. When you first entered the academy's gates almost four years ago, and the servants took your luggage, they carried items with more monetary value than they’ll likely ever make in their pitiable lives, like that wyvern-bone kukri, for example.

Ah, but you’re letting your mind wander as you let Alyssa deal with the actual monetary transactions for each of the adventurers who have approached your corner table in the tavern. You were pretty generous in your offer. Not everyone in this kingdom would pay half of a quest’s reward upfront, but here you are with an increasingly emptying coin purse. That’s not even mentioning the round you bought for the tavern before even announcing your offer or the round each adventurer gets for signing up. Marie tried to help at first but quickly gave up when she realized that any sort of math was involved in this process, and very quickly began giving moral support by utilizing a technique from her land known as “nomikai,” though to you all it looks like she’s doing is drinking rotgut with various scantily-clad witches and barbarians. It's not your scene. You prefer a nice and simple glass of wine to keep you company as you exert authority across the table. A princess’ role is to exert authority by staying as still as possible while watching over the people doing her bidding. You learned so when you were but a child.

You won’t find yourself having to move for quite a while, as out of all the two dozen or so adventurers who frequent the tavern at midnight, only around four find themselves uninterested in this quest. You can’t fathom why, but you suppose they all have other problems in their lives. Maybe a younger you would have been more upset at this, for these peasants should feel honored simply observing your radiance, but getting to serve under your magnificence? Eh, perhaps it's the late hour getting to you, but somehow, you find yourself unconcerned with that matter more than anything.

“Would you like another glass, Your Highness?” Says an eyepatched woman as she saunters up to the chair beside you.

You shake your head, “No, thank you, Clarice. It’s best if I keep my head clear.” You are not so much of a lightweight that a mere single glass should make you intoxicated. It only makes you feel a bit lighter.

The tavernkeeper’s daughter shrugs, “Aye, fair enough,” Before bringing the bottle of wine to her lips like a savage, “So where are you going to bring us all once all this gets sorted out?” She gestures toward the massive lizardfolk, trying to help his buddies sign the forms Alyssa has put in front of them.

“Us? You’re going as well?”

“Duh, might not have looked it the last you saw me, but me and pa are still adventurers at the end of the day.” She hits you with her elbow, a sign of camaraderie? “Sides, I still owe you a debt for, uh, last time…” She looks away as she mentions the slaver case, clearly uncomfortable.

She doesn’t owe you anything. What you did was simply your duty, but now is not the time to be argumentative. “Of course,” It is, however, time to change topics. “How skilled are the adventurers who will be joining me? You know these people better than I.”

She takes a second to scan the room with her one good eye, “It’s a better lot than average. None of the lower ranks usually frequent the bar this late into the night, so you’ve got a more experienced set of questers. Think the lower I can see here is Iron Rank, and they’re still vets, so you shouldn’t need to worry bout babying anyone.”

You nod, “Acceptable. And you?”

“Gold, but my cope is that I would be higher, but I spend too much time in this damn den.’

“Do you dislike working for your father?”

“Nah, love it here. Sides’ drinks are free for me.”

You blink, but she just said she spent too much time here? Whatever, you probably won’t figure that one out until you ponder it over in your head during a wash. “To answer your question, I plan to
