Earth-616, 2010.

Earlier today, you announced to the public the truth.

You are Tony Stark, and you are Iron Man.

The high from the media attention was almost worth revealing the fact. It wasn’t until you had left the press conference that the thought came to you that it was a mistake. Everyone from the military to gossip magazines would hound you now, you were sure of it.

You would worry about it later. Soon, sleep overtook you. You weren’t asleep long enough to have any real dreams, but for a few moments, you remembered. Afghanistan. Captivity. Dr. Yinsen. Him, bleeding in your arms. Then, nothing. You woke with a jolt. Happy was tapping your leg from the front seat.

“Home already?”

“Yup. Have a good night, Mr. Stark.”

He left you in the driveway, but wasn’t present long enough to hear what you heard. Alarms, coming from inside the house. Strangely, none blared externally. You walked to the door, noting it had been left open.

“Jarvis!”

“Welcome home, siiiiiiirrr.” The AI’s robotic voice slurred, then stopped. Across the front room, A man looked over the balcony, out at Malibu on the horizon. He was barely silhouetted by the light. You walked towards the steps, keeping your cool. Then, he spoke.

“I am Iron Man. You think you’re the only superhero in the world? Mr. Stark, you’ve become part of a bigger universe. You just don’t know it yet.” His voice boomed and carried even while facing opposite out towards the water. He turned to face you, appearance still hidden in the shadow.

“Who the hell are you?” You looked back incredulously. How had he gotten in, and disabled J.A.R.V.I.S., at that? Happy couldn’t have been more than a mile down the road.

“Nick Fury. Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

“Oh.” Right, like you were supposed to know whatever the hell that was.

He smiled for a moment, then spoke again.

“I’m here to talk to you about the Avenger Initiative.”

It was a blur. Earth’s ‘mightiest’ heroes, defending the weak. It sounded like shadowy, pseudo-world police. You liked the idea of being called a hero, but you did it your way. Whoever this guy was didn’t understand that.

He left you his card, and you threw it into the trash.

Terrifying. You couldn’t be left alone with your thoughts and nothing to do or no one to talk to you. A bottle of whiskey stood half-finished on an end table. You knew you shouldn’t indulge.

“Jarvis.”

“Yes, Sir?” A response, thank God.

“I want a full security system reboot, and an analysis on how that guy managed to shut you down. That’s not happening again. Oh, and-”

Counting 5 d100 failures, 2 successes.

”Run a background on Nick Fury, and this ‘shield’ thing. I’m gonna’ go tweak the suit.”

”I’ll let you know when I’m finished, Mr. Stark.”

You pour one drink, then two. You think about a third, and it goes back too. They bite hard, and you felt a spring in your step. Good, The numbing would come soon enough. Right now, you had the pep to do some work. You walked down the steps to the garage, the suit stood in the middle, silently.

“Sir, I have an analysis of my system’s takeover ready.” The suit reminded you of the family trip to England when you were younger. Suits of armor, standing like sentinels on the walls of the castle. Oh, how you wished Dad could have seen this.

“Let’s not make it an email, what happened?” Your head pounded slightly from the shots, you rubbed it with a groan as you opened the security door and entered the garage. It was untouched, unbothered. It felt like the only place left where you could come and hide from the world. Hide from all the reporters and suits that wanted nothing more to make a buck off you.

“I’ve traced the source of the breach to numerous field offices in the Washington D.C. area It seems… I was invaded by the government.” J.A.R.V.I.S.’ report was worrying. Your brow furrowed.

That guy wasn’t just another suit. It was a proper spook this time. You’d been ‘investigated’ before, but seeing how Uncle Sam was your top buyer, their efforts always faded.

You had the ultimate weapon. A suit of armor that could destroy anything you pleased. And now everyone wanted it. Stane wanted it. He tried to take it from you, and you stopped him. Not before almost dying.

“That makes two of us. Compile the breach data and try to segment the local security from the building servers a bit more. I want the two percent of your processing dedicated to network monitoring moved up to five. Anything yet on Mr. Fury?”

“Still working on it, Sir. Analysis from your fight with the late Mr. Obadiah Stane is finished, however.” Let’s get to work. Let’s stay on top.

“Where do we improve first?”

”Maintaining power proved to be a notable issue. Your suit demanded to use the repulsors for multiple purposes, often at the same time. I’ve drafted several schematics to rewire the suit, and plans for increasing the amp-minute recharge rate.”

“That can’t be everything, can it?”

“Your accuracy was also to be improved upon, sir. Your internal display is slightly uncoordinated with your a-”

“Alright, alright, I get it. I’m a piss-poor shot. I’ll start on-”

[blue]”Excellent choice, Sir.”[/blue]

It took a few hours of work, twenty or so tries with Dum-E holding up paper targets. The slight adjustment of your palm with each try. Your fingers started getting weary, but you were onto something.

“Not bad…”

[blue]”Mr. Stark, your attentive level is degrading rapidly. I recommend you retire for the evening.”[/blue]

You were exhausted. Not tired enough to get up and shower, but you knew that if you went through all the motions, you'd lie down in bed clean, but restless and awake. That would start this over again, no good.

“Right here is comfy, thanks though.”

You felt something drape over you. Dum-E had brought a blanket. It was soft, but heavy, perfect. Was this a fireproof blanket? You weren't sure, you were already asleep.

[blue]”Very well. Goodnight, Sir.”[blue]

[green]ALL COMBAT ACTION AP COSTS REDUCED BY 1, ACCURACY INCREASED BY 30%[/green]

And then, everything rang out, waking you up. You were about to tell J.A.R.V.I.S. to can it, and hang up on it, but it was picked up. What?

“Tony. Are you fucking kidding me?” Pepper. That's right, you hadn’t spoken to her since before the conference.

“Good morning, Pepper! I missed you too-o…” Your head throbbed. You needed food.

“Are you drunk?”

“No, no, just hungover, it’s fine. I’m already-” Fingers fumbled for a box of Pop-Tarts, stashed deep in the shelves of the bench.

“-working on the solution. H-hey, Jarvis, is this what we’re doing, now? Answering calls without permission?”

[blue]”Calls from your personal assistant, relating to your schedule and success, are approved by me.”[/blue]

“Whatever, I’ll bet you forgot what today is, too.”

“No, no, I remembered that, too.”

“Oh, really? Tell me, then, Mr. Stark. What’s today?”

“The day that [i]you[/i] and I spend on the water. The yacht could be ready in an hour.”

“You must’ve already forgot yesterday, funny.”

“There was something about a press conference, and you being mad at me.”

“I am Iron Man? Are you serious, Tony? I’m so mad, you’re not even worth the energy to shout at. Review for the HAMMER expo is today at their lab. You’re one of the guest judges, remember?”

“Right, right, looking over what all brains have been working on, and showing the best in [i]six-months[/i]-do I really have to be there?”

“Yes. Stark Industries shares are climbing after that stunt yesterday. You [i]will[/i] keep up appearances.”

Looks like we’re taking the suit, without any mishaps.

”Take the suit.”

Even though she wasn’t in the room, a sly smile crossed your face.

“What?!”

“I’m keeping up appearances as CEO, right? Well, Iron Man also happens to be a CEO, and he can make it work.” You had managed the blanket off you at this point, and were upstairs, getting ready to start the day.

“Out of the question, the Air National Guard and FAA both want your head for flying that thing around anyhow, now that they know who’s flying it.”

“This isn’t an argument. See you there?”

Nothing more from her, except the dial tone that indicated that she’s already hung up. Fuck. You had to make it up to her. You would make it up to her, somehow. You got ready and got into the suit, screaming across the sky without much interference.

You touched down in the parking lot of HAMMER Labs. Justin Hammer was already waiting for you, greeting you with arms outstretched.

“Mr. Stark! You’re never one for a boring entrance. Little early to be waltzing around with that kinda’ tech, don’t you think?”

“Well, Mr. Hammer. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. What have you got for me today?”

“Some good stuff! All kinds of folks are ready to show off everything my think tank cooks up.”

“Save the pleasantries for after?”

“Sure thing, Mr. Business. The other judges are waiting. Come by my office afterwards, I’ll have something chilled to drink.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Most of the day was a blur. Projects and weapons and experiments all piling up and none of it was even relatively close to where STARK Industries was. Close to the end, Pepper had caught up. She wasn’t there to judge, just there for you. Even as annoyed as she was, she still showed up. You both didn’t say much, but she was great for the banter when you needed to bounce your thoughts off of someone.

A bearded, lumbering man in a lab coat sat in the next room, twiddling his thumbs. When he saw you all enter, he stood, somewhat towering over you all. He seemed more fit for a weight room, and was out of place in the sterile environment. A judge, Mr. Something-or-other, gestured to the man, and you shook his hand.

“One of our Ph.D.’s, Gregor Shapanka.”

“Doctor. What have you got for us?”

“They… didn’t tell me Tony Stark would be here… In the suit, no less!” Mr. Shapanka’s eyes had widened, and his excitement soon turned back into nervousness. You were used to these kinds of brains, all hype and no social skills.

“Time is money, let’s cut to it, Greg.”

“O-of course. In a word; Cryotechnology. Immortality, impeccable preservation, endless energy usage. I was q-quite inspired by your own arc reactor, sir…. Everything you see in this room? We’ve powered from this source!”

It seemed stable, for a moment. A little glass cylinder, at the center of the room. You watched for a second, then heard cracking and pressure building. You moved to cover Pepper and the others before the container popped, sending glass everywhere. The judges were a little scratched, but nothing lethal. Gregor had taken cover behind a table that had been cut up with shards, sighing with relief after seeing no one was horribly hurt.”

“O-of course, we’re still working out the kinks… I’m terribly sorry, Mr. Stark.” One of the judges you had shielded with the suit turned to you, brushing glass off their shoulders.

“I’m not so sure about this, what do you think,Tony?”

>”Not bad. Pepper, let’s get Greg an email offer by the end of the day. I want him to present this at the STARK Expo instead, in a year.” (Gregor Shapanka comes to develop cryotechnology for STARK Industries.)

”Not bad. Pepper, let’s get Greg an email offer by the end of the day. I want him to present this at the STARK Expo instead, in a year.”

(Gregor Shapanka comes to develop cryotechnology for STARK Industries.)

“What?” Pepper flicked glass out of her hair, death-staring you after almost being shredded. “Are you serious?”

“Absolutely, let’s give this guy a shot.” She sighed, and opened her touchpad, to carry out your wishes. You didn’t pay her for nothing, after all.

When you finished the judging, Justin came to greet you by the main entrance, holding two champagne flutes of which he offered neither to you. “Tony, what’s this I’m hearing about you stealing one of my guys?”

“Nothing personal, Justin. You always piggyback off of me anyhow. Consider it a compliment, I finally found something of yours worth copying.” His expression tightened, and he drank both flutes almost angrily.

“Is it worth fighting?”

Your smile turned smug, and you turned to leave, walking towards the entrance. “In your case? No. See you at the Expo, Justin.”

(Justin Hammer will remember that…)

Outside, Pepper waited, a car pulled in and awaiting you. She gawked at you in the suit, looking unimpressed. “You can’t take that off for the car?”

“I can’t- I need a whole mess of drills and clamps to get this thing off-”

“Whatever. I’m still trying to manage yesterday’s fallout. Just don’t pull any public stunts, please?” You gave her a nod, then laid back in your seat as you both rolled away from HAMMER Labs.

At this moment, J.A.R.V.I.S. decided to pipe up. ”Sir. My search of Mr. Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. are complete.”

“And?”

”Nicholas Joseph Fury. Served in the United States Army, retired Colonel. Nothing found connecting him to his agency, however. Public records show him having been retired and living abroad in Bromley, UK. S.H.I.E.L.D. was formed after the dissolution of the Strategic Science Reserve post-World War Two. Nothing more after that on either subject, Sir.” Pepper listened in, becoming increasingly concerned at the description, and at your calmness.

“Great, I’m being stalked by a proper Man in Black.”

“Hold on, what is Jarvis talking about?”

“Oh, right. Forgot to mention. Some guy came by last night, government honcho with an eyepatch and everything. Wants me and the suit for some kind of police-themed boyband. I’d show you the security footage, but they clipped it.”

Pepper sighed, and shook her head. “Good Lord, it never ends with you.”

“I keep things interesting.”

”Sir, I also have a list of secondary improvements to the suit to present as well. To be developed when you next find time. I have transmitted them to Ms. Potts’ touchpad.” You beckoned for the pad from her, and she crossed her arms defensively.

“Can’t it wait, Tony?”

“Let me just give it a glance.”

“I’m worki-”

“Gimme. Please.”

She placed the pad firmly in your grip. You had to be careful, so as to not crush it with the strength of your metallic fingers. A few quick improvements were visible. Ammunition increases, protection systems, and reinforcing the suit joints themselves. Nothing directly related to combat, but they’d give you a boost wherever you decided to work first.

“Let’s increase…”

>”Flares, fire retardant, and deicer. Let’s be ready in case something worse than the suit stops by.” (Flare capacity increased from 5 to 10. Gain Fire Suppression Systems. Maximum Altitude increased from 60,000ft to 90,000ft. Gain All Weather Operational Capability.)

The next few days eventually turned into a week, weeks turned into a month. A whole month. Pepper had calmed down the media, and you were able to keep the politicians and the military at bay. The suit was your intellectual property, and no one could take it, not yet. Most of the help had been Pepper. Loyal Ms. Potts. You were still wracking your head late one night when the alarms rang, pulling you out of bed. No one calling or invading this time, just J.A.R.V.I.S. with an alert.

“What’s going on?”

“There is a security breach at STARK Industries. Reports of a lone intruder in the main database. Footage depicts our top Cryonics scientist attempting to breach and obtain critical files.”

“That’s that dweeb from a month ago’s roundhouse. Greg Sharp, or something, wasn’t it?”

“Gregor Shapanko’s project has made significant progress in his brief period of employment at STARK Industries, including notable results in his reactor and preservation projects. His presence is of notable question, as he attempted to gain access to arc reactor schematics-”

“Alright, let’s go put a stop to it.”

You suited up, and flew to STARK industries. You put a brief word out to the police, but didn’t think much about calling anyone else. When you arrived, the datacenter was a mess. Smoke covered your vision, but it wasn’t from any fire you could see. Even when you transferred your vision to thermal, you only saw the dark blue pools of chill and ice. Wait a minute, ice?

The smoke cleared, revealing the roof caved in like the worst of the arctic had dropped on a snowstorm on the datacenter. Walking out of the building, into the lit parking lot, stood Gregor Shapanko. On top of his lab coat, however, he wore some kind of harness. It almost reminded you of your first suit, except this didn’t have armor. Large blue thermal fluid lines wrapped around his limbs and torso, all connecting at some kind of power source in the center of his chest.

“Ah, Mr. Stark! So nice of you to witness my first trial! It’s a shame you got here late, but all the merrier, no!?”

“Greg!? Hey, nice suit, buddy. Really digging the white on blue, gives me a big ‘Frozone,’ vibe. I must not be paying you enough for whatever it is you’ve got going on here. Well, we’ll figure it out when the cops show up, deal?”

“No… I am sorry, Mr. Stark! No deal! I will take that reactor from you, and build it better!”

“Come and get it, bud.”

You land, and approach the Doctor to subdue him. In reaction, he coats his forearms and shins in ice. He must have had some kind of hard thermal layer which allowed him to freeze up his arms. Some kind of super-neoprene? You weren’t interested in drawing this out, but you didn’t want to risk burning up the suit’s juice either. You threw a punch and a kick against his guard.

“Y’know, I think Malibu County has some pretty good English classes, I’ll tutor you.”

“Tutor who?!”

“It’s Shapanka. STARK Databases. Little busy-!”

His icy armor started to buckle, in reaction, he fired ice from his palms. If you weren’t so focused on trying to avoid it, you would have admired how he designed his ‘ice-repulsors’ to fire similar to how yours worked. You almost managed to get out of the way. One burst flew past your head, the other hitting your armor square in the torso.

You felt hot enough to keep going, then you were alerted.

“Sir, your chest reactor is consuming a significant amount of power. Some kind of complication with your heart, I am unable to process- The suit will have an estimated 30 seconds of current power and charging before shutdown. I predict you’ll fall unconscious shortly thereafter.”

“What?! No, no, this isn’t happening! God… something tastes funny…”

You did everything right, you had him on the ropes. Of course your damned heart decided to act up. You couldn’t have everything, it just wasn’t fair to the universe. Your heart clawed at you from the inside-out. Your chest was bursting, and you clenched at it over the chest piece of your suit. You knelt to the floor.

Bloodied, but still upright, Shapanka stood, charging the lines on his suit. He held a hand out, preparing to freeze you in place.

“Feeling tired, Tony?! That is fine. I’ll be gone soon enough…”

No bueno. That wasn’t good enough. You were stopping him here and now. One more turn before you pass out. Make it count.
