You were once but a small mischief of rats living in the dark corners of humanity's mighty architecture, scrounging around for food and a place to sleep among trash. Then one day, the humans were gone, as if vanished from the earth. What remained was the rat, a grand spark of light gave them the gifts of sentience, intelligence and the ability to walk on two legs relatively well.

It was time for the rat revolution, time to take over the remnants of humanity and become the new rulers of the earth. One step at a time, of course, a mere man-house could be a mighty kingdom for the rat-kin.

Clear winner for the apartment building


The mischiefs of mankind's apartment buildings are numerous, they lived in the trash, the walls and the great undertunnels where man-waste went. When mankind went away and rats were sparked, the mischiefs took over small areas in which they lived. Each mischief was usually composed of a couple and its numerous progeny, and these families formed alliances with other families, forming rat-clans.

In man's apartment buildings, rats were most numerous due to all the waste the tall ones generated. In the first few weeks of rat-sentience, known as the Great Rampage, rats fought each other for the resources left behind by mankind. Since man wasn't here anymore, then no more waste would be made, and rats would no longer feed on this everlasting cycle. Strength was in numbers in these dark-deadly days, the clans that formed were composed of many mischiefs.

I don't like the idea of being sandwiched between two potential enemies... the basement has utility and is defensible to a degree. The roof would be easy to keep people away from, but then we've got BIRDS

Our mischiefs have always lived in the basement, dwelling among humanity's trash, with direct access to the great under-tunnels through pipes. The rest of the clans in the building are forced to either cross through our territory or head down through the mighty round metal-hatches of the streets.

In the basements, we have access to many hiding places, manfolk kept their things here in the depths, in carved out storage spaces. These storages are full of trash. There are also advanced machines, but our ratkin simply can't decipher what these are about, the smarter rats say they may have been responsible for the warmth during winter.

The basements have many exits. There are the great stairs, leading to the ground level where the ground rats are, then the high windows leading directly to the streets, and finally the great metal pipes that lead to the underground tunnels.

Our clan is formed by a whole bunch of mischiefs, we are armed and armored with whatever we could scrounge up from man-stuff. Some of us bear forks, others knives, some have chewed out wood-things and plastic-things in order to sharpen them. As armor, we tore through wood and leather to form some basic equipment, and for clothing we chewed up paper and cloth to form robes.

Our clanfolk are housed in one of the storage spaces of the basement, the one in the bottom right corner. Our mischiefs are rather autonomous, each one forming a house-nest with cardboard, wood, cloth and paper as they found it, these are spread out through the various floor-levels of the storage space, each of these 'floors' created by the presence of boxes, piles of clothes, and other large man-stuff. Our alliance bonds between one another are strong. Beyond the fact that we meet up every once in a while to take decisions or undertake a communal task, our mischiefs don't do much together.

As far as we know there are ten storage spaces here, where other clans safely dwell behind strong man-doors.

We make food mainly by scavenging through some old foodstuff humanity left behind. Canned food, some other stuff that's not so fresh, and by hunting insects and lizards through trapping or proper hunts. We also sometimes go on great under-hunts in the tunnels below, where more animals dwell.

The other rat-clans in the basement are rather wary of one another. We are able to live relatively self-sufficiently, but our progeny increases evermore as our newfound intelligence brings abundance, we will soon need more space for them, and a more efficient use of our home and resources, say the smart rats.

We start with arming-growing and soon we make different clans to cover-engulf the many of task a head.

The rat-clan gathered in a great floor-meet to decide on a course of action! Many upper rats come from the upper floors to adventure into the under-tunnels, if they want to cross, these clans must pay tolls in man-stuff we can't find down here and in food.

Many of the explorers coming from the up-floors are surprised at our boldness, they tell us they will go through the pipes of other clans, but some decide to pay the toll if only because the pipes we carved into bring them to their destination quicker.

As the other rat-clans in the basement observe, they see that we get precious man-things from up above while they get nothing! Many other rat-clans implement a similar toll, as we do.

But-but, some big bold rats dare defy us! They beat up our toll-takers and cross through without paying a thing! Unthinkable! We have decided to arm up a few rats with some pooled weapons and armor, our sharpest knives and man-shoe leathers are used to protect these bold rats. Meanwhile, we set up a proper tollhouse near the wall holes that lead to the pipes, with cardboard walls and gates.

Our relations with the rats in the upper floors are soured!

One smart rat points to a page from a torn magazine, we look just like the manfolk guarding strange streets in some dusty place! Our rat-clan is proud now that it has an army! But keeping some our beefier and stronger rats around just standing around and guard places is super costly... How did menfolk do it? The smart rats are stupefied. Still, the shiny stuff we get from the tolls compensates! But the mighty rat army we see in our cheesy dreams is far, far from us!

Sometimes, other basement rats try to come in through our pipes in order to head down to a specific section of the under-tunnels. They pay the toll too, of course, all non-clan-rats pay the toll! But they seethe and squeak and say no way! Fellow basement rats don't pay tolls to go to the under-tunnels!

This has led to over a dozen squeaky wrestling ever since we implemented the tolls... The smart rats from each mischief gather once more to decide what to do.

We need to be clever rats. All rats scavenge from the man-world. But the man-things will soon run out with no man-folk to make them. When the man-things are gone, the rats who learned to make things will rule the world. The first step is knowing where we can go, what we can find. There are two things rats will need:
First: food.
We have seen in the magazine-pictures that man-folk would grow plants in the sunlight and raise beasts for meat. We can't grow plants in the basement and we can't feed beasts without plants. So we make a deal with the roof-rats, we *deal with* the roof-rats, or we find a new building-roof or place by exploring.
Second: tools and weapons.
If we learn to make good weapons, like rat-sized crossbows, we can conquer other rats. We make good tools and we can make even better things.
