It is a regular civ thread, but you can only choose a female human leader for your civilization.

Describe what kind of leader you want and the story we should write for her.

These threads usually have very few players, so feel free to go into great detail.

The village of Kent wasn't in the frontlines in the Thousand Year War, so no one cared much about it. All the men were recruited and sent do die in droves.

But the frontlines began to move for the first time in decades. The enemy sent waves upon waves of fighters, and there was a chokepoint, the Kent Pass.

You are Alita. Born the daughter of a poor huntsman, you learn to use bow and arrow from an early age. You are very strong from carrying around game for the hunters for many years, and you are exceedingly lethal with a knife from having skinned way too many animals to count.

When you heard from one of the women that the enemy warriors were going to pass through Kent Pass, you organized a defense for the village, which by now pretty much only had women and children. You helped the women handcraft bows and arrows and equipped them all, then laid in ambush at the pass.

Wave after wave of the enemies fell to your arrows and the enemy fled!

Months later, you learned that this glorious defense was essential for General Dravos to win a decisive victory in the region, driving the enemy even beyond the stagnated border and turning the tables!

He came visit to see who had organized such a magnificent defense!

He was surprised to learn that it was a woman.

He commended your martial bravery to the King himself, who deigned to turn Kent into a Baronate, and make you the Baroness.

Now, Alita, Baroness of Kent, Defender of Kent Pass, your story as ruler begins!

Kent has a population of 4,000 people, mainly women and children. There are very few men, and most of them are crippled or very old.

How are you going to solve the demographic problem, considering the war is still raging?
> Offer sanctuary for deserters and runaways. You need men, you don't care if they are cowards.
> Recruit war refugees. Start sending envoys to destroyed or collapsing villages and offer resettlement in Kent.
> Offer retirement for tired mercenaries. The willing women of Kent will be more than glad to marry those strong veterans from war, though this might weaken the war effort.
> Encourage polygamous households. This is no time to be picky, every seed is needed in the neighbourhood.
> Adopt orphans and war bastards. You have plenty of women who could take care of the war orphans that are all over the kingdom.

At great expense, you manage to convince General Dravos that you need at least a Few horses if you are to run a baronate. He deigns to let you have ten horses.

With those, you start sending couriers all over the kingdom to spread the word that your new baronate is recruiting war refuges - people from destroyed or collapsed villages. You offer them resettlement - land, starter cattle and the opportunity to grow in a new land.

Every time your couriers come back, they bring more and more war orphans, which are assigned to willing women to take care of.

Your population begins to grow, though it is mostly children.

A trickle of families, lone women and very young men who haven't been drafted yet start coming from small destroyed villages. They all have sad stories of how their people been ravaged by the unrelenting enemy, they themselves barely escaping with their lives.

Once, one of your couriers manage to attract the surviving population of an entire village (some hundred souls), who grabbed everything they had and came to live with you in the new baronate.

The story of your brave defense of Kent Pass inspires people, who think living in such a defensible place is a good idea.

By the end of the year, you attracted well over a thousand people into your burgeoning baronate, though the demographic pressure is still strong.

In the autumn, you are invited to the king's palace. The make you a silk dress and you recount several times the story of how you defended the place to a bunch of posh nobles.

You learn that creating new baronates is very rare. The last one was decades ago, for similar reasons of bravery. The king wants above all to ensure that his lands will be defended by strategically minded people.

You get to know the king personally. His name is Wenceslaus III.

You realize that these parties at the king's palace are great opportunities for power brokering. How will you spend your time there?

> Connect with the local Count, maybe you can get extra resources to your baronate, even though you know those are stretched thin
> Focus on building good relations with the Royal Family, imply you're seeking a noble marriage and that the king should help you find someone
> Get to know the Generals, Dravos could introduce you to them and you could talk tactics and maybe get some more weapons for your people
> Talk to the local Guildmasters, you will need a lot of artisans to turn a little village into something more, perhaps you could attract some
> Spend time with the Jester and the Court Magician, they know everyone and are trusted advisors to the king

After recounting your tale for the hundredth time to a thousand different people, you figure that you might as well use your time at the palace to find a noble husband. You talk to the king in one of the dinners, saying that a man of his dignity is like a father to the fatherless, and implying you'd be honored if he could help you find a good husband, since you don't know the nobles very well yet.

The king thinks your proposition to be very interesting, and discusses it with his family. The next day, the queen invites you to her quarters. Her name is Victoria. She is very young, perhaps only a few years older than you. She says she's the second wife of the king, the last one died in childbirth. With a softness and tact you never saw in anyone, she probes deeply into your soul, gently asking you lots of personal questions that you feel no way to escape from.

She asks things like:

"What qualities do you value most in a companion?"
> Loyalty, strength of will, and a quiet mind.
> Someone who does not flinch from blood or truth.
> The courage to stand beside me, and the wisdom to know when not to.

"How do you handle dissent among those who serve you?"
> I listen first. If their words hold merit, I adapt. If not, I silence.
> By reminding them who held the pass when no one else dared.
> Firmly. Unity keeps us alive — I allow no cracks in the stone.

"Would you ever marry a foreigner if it meant peace or prosperity?"
> If my people would eat better and sleep safely — yes.
> So long as he bows to our gods and laws, I care not where he’s from.
> Peace bought in chains is no peace at all — I’d rather bleed.

"Do you desire children, Baroness?"
> Yes. A future without heirs is no future at all.
> Not now — not while war still whispers at our gates.
> I would raise warriors, not babes. When the time comes, we’ll see.

"Have you ever loved someone you could not have?"
> Yes. He never returned from the war.
> Once. But duty has louder footsteps than love.
> No. I do not let my heart outpace my bow.

"If your husband was weak, would you protect him or replace him?"
> Protect him — quietly. I’ve strength enough for both.
> Replace him. Kent cannot afford softness in high places.
> I’d sharpen him, if he could be sharpened. If not, he falls.

Choose your answers!

You also have the opportunity to ask at least one question to the queen, though you lack her tact. What do you wanna ask?

It's always kinda weird when people use the name of somewhere you live IRL as a fictional place (t. Kent)
>Someone who does not flinch from blood or truth.
Someone who will face everything with us, no matter what
>I listen first. If their words hold merit, I adapt. If not, I silence.
To dismiss our former peers is idiotic, but we must be able to tell them no
>So long as he bows to our gods and laws, I care not where he’s from.
Neutral on the subject
>Yes. A future without heirs is no future at all.
What better way to address the demographic crisis than lead by example with a horde of children?
>Yes. He never returned from the war.
A tragic tale, all too common nowadays
>Protect him — quietly. I’ve strength enough for both.
Ultimately, there's no shame in it, though it'd be better if we didn't have to.

She nods understandingly at your every answer, and reacts in a vivacious manner. She gives you the impression that she will remember those for all time.

When you finally find an opening to ask her a question, you shoot "How do I stay on King's good side?"

She laughs a bit and answers apparently without thinking.

"Be useful, but never threatening. Keep your lands quiet, your coffers full, and your loyalty visible. Let the King believe his victories are his own — and your brilliance, merely devotion. Above all, stay alive and stay remembered; that is rarer than favor."

You also find it in you to ask:

"What does the King envision for his kingdom, and for us?"

"He wants a kingdom that obeys faster than it bleeds. As for us, I’m not sure he sees anything beyond duty and heirs; love is something he buried with his first queen. But sometimes... rarely... he speaks of a realm that no longer needs men like him.", she says, with a deeply pensive air.

The party goes on for a few more days. The queen keeps you near hear like a confident, whispering many things into your ear about the people in the court and asking your opinion about everyone and everything.

On the last day, she tells you she knows just the right people to introduce you to. You've seen them briefly, but besides telling them your story a bunch of times, you haven't had the opportunity to actually talk to them.

Queen Victoria seems to imply they are perfect matches for you! She will introduce you to the one you choose.

> Ser Tavian Morn. Foreign knight, exiled and landless, offering blade and honor to a strong woman. He lives by an unshakable code, respects strength and truth, and would be loyal without demanding submission. Haunted by a tragic betrayal in his past that costed him his titles, he seems to struggle to fully trust anyone.
> Marshal Daren Volt. Bastard of Redcliff, brilliant battlefield commander and brutal realist. Raised in war, he values leadership, strategy, and raising heirs strong enough to survive the harsh world. Fiercely competitive, his relentless drive for victory often blinds him to the needs and feelings of others.
> Garran Blackthorn. Reclusive warlord from the forested north, speaks in actions, not words. Silent, fierce, and unyielding, Garran trusts few but defends them with unwavering resolve. He was sickly as a child and is overly fond of books.

I think he has many of the qualities we seek and brings with him high-society experience and rulership (which knights did, outside of battle), which we lack. Show him our own trust and sincerity and we can hopefully wear away the doubt.

Queen Victoria introduces you to Ser Tavian Morn, foreign knight, exiled and landless.

He speaks to you with a strange accent, and talks about the battlefield where he lost a friend who followed him blindly.

He speaks calmly and you had never spoke with a man who exuded such confidence. Most men you knew were anxious boys in comparison. He seems like the kind of man who knows himself.

Though you talk at length, walking around in the palace with a bunch of servants trailing behind, you notice he shares very little about himself. He mostly asks you questions about what you enjoy doing and what kind of life you envision for yourself in the future.

As night falls, the servants go to sleep and the two of you are left (almost) alone in a balcony, with just a sleepy servant girl who is too exhausted to care about what the two of you do.

You see a falling star in the night sky. Tavian noticed it as well.

Tomorrow you're headed back to your barony.

You tell Tavian to come visit you at your barony in the summer.

He seems surprised at the invitation, but agrees.

"I will be there.", he says, before the two of you wave goodbye at each other for the night.

You return to your barony first thing the next morning!

It takes you a couple weeks on horseback to get there.

Once you arrive, the people greet you with news!

There was a town meeting in her absence. The people were discussing who should handle matters when you are away.

A Council of Women is established to handle affairs when you are away! You can't help but realize you gave away a little bit of your power with no struggle whatsoever. You remember nobles saying something about not giving too much power to councils. Oh well...

Pondering the mines cannot be under the thumb of a bunch of bandits, you muster your army - the women you defended Kent Pass with!

You have about 500 trained female archers, with roughly 50 of them being highly skilled.

Though decently skilled in Archery, most of them fare poorly in hand to hand combat. You would do well to keep that in mind.

How many archers are you going to take with you to route out the bandits?

Ordering all the witches to be tortured until they confess and then burned at the stake you set the precedent for future witch hunts! Now the population is far more watchful of any strange behavior amongst themselves and everyone becomes very paranoid that maybe other witches are out there and looking for signs of witch activity.

You tell the teenagers you will pretend you didn't see it, but next time you will disburse ten lashes to anyone who is caught amidst such practices.

Then you lead 30 highly skilled archers and 300 archer militia to go deal with the bandits!

When the bandit scouts see that immense mob of archers coming their way, they send one emissary to negotiate their surrender!

The emissary claims the bandits are just retired soldiers that know nothing but a life of warfare.

They thought of taking over this road to charge a tithe so they could retire.

They didn't expect a massive army to come after them at all.

There is just thirty of them or so, and they all belonged to the same company in the army they once served, being the only survivors of over five thousand men. They defected when their liege wanted to simply assign them to a new company and send them back to the front.

You ponder for a moment.

How will you deal with the bandits?
> Banditry in your barony shall not be tolerated! Ignore their pleas and murder all the bandits gruesomely!
> Accept their surrender and tell them to leave and if you see them around here again they will be all murdered.

You forcefully conscript those tired old soldiers turned bandits into your army under threat of death!

They are far too tired of waging war, but when they learn your village is very rarely attacked and that you have lots and lots of unmarried women, they think this is a place where they could settle.

At your request they start training your army in the ways of proper warfare and banditry. Their leader is a veteran who lost one eye called Rufus.

These men have fighting as second nature. They don't even like sparring, because they say it "dulls their reflexes".

They say it is weird to teach women how to fight, but they will try.

After a few weeks, your archers complain about the grueling exercise regime the old soldiers keep putting them through.

The old soldiers complain these women are wimps and they couldn't hold their own in a sword fight against any real soldiers, they better stick to archery instead.

The militia see no point in this training and wish to be dismissed from it. They are growing increasingly displeased.

> Have the old soldiers pick just the very best women to train into close quarters combat
> Insist that they keep drilling the entire militia, even if the women continue to complain
> Tell the militia they will be required one month of training per year on winters and dismiss them
> Write in

The old soldiers are way too tired of this life of warfare. You fear they might simply defect again if you keep making their lives difficult.

> You're being magnanimous enough letting them live
> Offer them some land, cattle and let them marry
> Offer them the feud they initially requested
> Write in

It is the second year of your rule!

Spring is coming around, it is time for planting!

You have very little money in your coffers, most of which you will use buying seeds.

What are you gonna plant?
> Plant a lot of wheat, staple crop can't go wrong with it
> Plant a lot of barley, you want beer to lift people's morale
> Plant a lot of rye, you want to make strong spirits to sell
> Plant a lot of oats, you need extra food for all the children

You insist the old soldiers keep drilling the entire militia! Discontentment spreads like wildfire.

You offer the old soldiers some land, cattle and let them marry! They find brides quite easily.

You plant a lot of oats, you need extra food for all the children!

Summer comes. Tavian shows up as promised. He comes in full armor, with his horse, bringing three squires mounted in donkeys.

You show him the full extent of your dominion. He seems impressed at the proportion of warriors you keep in your lands - he says that in his lands he kept far fewer warriors.

He says that the best warriors tend to demand a lot of resources to put their lives in the line.

Though the levies allow you to press people into service, you must manage this carefully. Calling upon the levies too often or for too long is not a good idea, everyone has a limit.

You go on long horseback rides everyday, occasionally hunting. You showcase your huntress expertise and he seems impressed. He says that in his land hunting was a privilege of the nobility - so that people wouldn't overhunt the woods.

Your village has always been so small that the few hunters here didn't ever had a chance at overhunting.

Over the weeks, he opens up a bit and you learn:

His brother once torched an entire village.

His brother and father were killed in an ambush by his cousin.

His cousin usurped his titles and blamed him for it, he was banished for kinslaying unfairly and had to flee his former kingdom. He sees no hope whatsoever for recovering them.

His routine is fairly strict, he wakes up before dawn and exercises for three hours. He mostly practices fencing, in full armor. He has the weird custom of bathing everyday after the exercise sessions. While he is training his squires collect dry firewood and boil water to prepare his bath. He then bathes for about an hour. Then he oversees his squires do maintenance on his armor and weapons. Only after that he goes looking for something to eat.

With summer ending, he was preparing to bid you farewell...

> Ask him to come again next year.
> Tell him to stay. You'd like to have him as your knight.
> Tell him to stay. Say you'd like to get married.

A wandering scribe arrives in the village. He has a lot of parchment and ink in his donkey, but he has even ran out of food. He offers his services in exchange for a place to stay for awhile and some food. Upon a cursory inspection of his papers, you notice he is a good illustrator, though with a propensity of drawing indecencies. He was kicked out of a monastery for drawing way too many naked people.

You tell Tavian you'd like to get married. He proposes to you!

When do you want to get married?
> By Fall
> By Winter
> By Spring
> By Summer

You punish the orphans severely with ten lashes. They scream imprecations while being lashed, you think they feel the treatment to be unfair, but everyone else agrees that this will build character.

You bind the scribe to your fief and find him a wife. His name is Claudius. You marry him to one of the butcher's daughters.

It is harvest time! Everyone get together to harvest the grain, mainly oats.

Rolling to determine outcomes!

1 - very bad harvest
2-3 - bad harvest
4-7 - average harvest
8-9 - good harvest
10 - very good harvest

Then it is time to pay the Crown their tithe! You don't have any money right now, so you'll just send 30% of your food in wagons pulled by donkeys.

The crown will only be displeased if you send less than 30% of an average harvest. If they are displeased, they will send tax collectors to investigate.

> Send 30% of your harvest
> Send more or less than that (specify)

Oats is very good food for people and animals!
> Feed your children well so they grow healthy and strong (+1 HEALTH)
> Feed your animals well so you can increase your livestock or sell them later (+1 HERDS)
> Sell some of your food for some good money (+1 MONEY)

You have a very meager harvest, and you have to really dig in into your food reserves. (FOOD STORES -2)

You send what you can to the capital, with an apology since you had such a bad harvest.

You barely have enough to feed your children the essential (no health bonus).

During the winter you stay at home practicing crafts. (+1 TRADE GOODS)

You decide to marry in the spring! Who will you invite?

You have your people hunt in the surrounding wilderness!

The Commander of the Watch Towers at the Kent Pass died, you believe of natural causes. You need a new commander! The job is critical - monitoring the horizon to see approaching enemies, and light fires to alert the village to mobilize the army. You have ten such towers, which can give you early warning over 20 miles away, giving you roughly a day to prepare for any invasion. They are manned by a couple militia archers each, who rotate in 12 hour turns all the time.

> Michele, Your Trusted Lieutenant The sharpest mind at your side - but promoting her leaves your flank exposed where it matters most.

> Cadet Jori Tams - A bright-eyed youth with a soldier’s heart and a firelit dream of becoming a hero.

You receive the visitors for a couple days. Sir Garland says that his liege, Count Raphale, will be very glad to meet such a brave young woman as yourself. His county is farther away from the battle zone, but he constantly sends men to the frontlines. He admits very few of them return.

You put Sergeant Greth in charge of the Watch Towers.

You send your people to go mine in the mountains! (+1 MONEY)

Then you take your horse and head to Fort Bennigham, the headquarters of the army where the Generals stay pontificating about strategy when they aren't needed in the field.

They don't let you in!

But luckily, General Dravos was around and vouches for you, then they let you in.

They put you up to par on the strategy! They show you region maps with tiny wooden figurines representing the soldiers.

"We have roughly 50,000 men on the frontlines. We lose about 1,000 men every week. But we can conscript enough men fast enough to replenish our numbers."

"According to the last census, the kingdom has 6 million people."

"This war has lasted for a long time, and will likely last for many years more. There are only four contested regions that change hands every few years."

"Drake Pass, a surprisingly fertile land, but that few dare settle. It is futher north."

"Cymbalus, a vast open plain. Incredibly fertile. Indefensable. Also unsettlable. But people defend and settle it anyway. They came through here to attack Kent."

"Torvalus, a very rich mountainous region to the south. It is through there that they occasionally manage to slip deeper inland."

"Mard, by the coastline. No one can spare resources for a naval blockade right now, but hundreds of years ago that was viable"

"Despite these regions being unsettlable due to war, people from all sides and even third parties like to settle there. As I said, the mountains hold riches, and the lands are very fertile. Thus, both kingdoms want them."

"Believe me when I say, we already tried everything, many times. This war will end someday, but due to external factors."

The generals say your village hasn't contributed men in two years and ask how many men can the barony contribute.

Well, a few youth Did reach recruitment age...

"We can spare 30 men. We have a little breathing room, though we can't open our fist any more than that."

"I understand. That is more than what I was expecting already!", says the oldest man you ever saw. General Dravos later tells you this is the legendary Marshal Leon Volt. When he says that, you remember hearing about someone with that name. Dravos tells you the Volt family is known for their martial prowess, many high ranking officials come from that family - marshals, generals, colonels, majors... There are a bunch in this very room! Seems like military brilliance runs in their veins.

Later, however, you hear some gossip that military ranks are largely Hereditary, and the Volt basically only put their own family in positions of military leadership if they can help it. They gatekeep everyone else as much as possible, and the king trusts them so he lets them get away with it.

You hear about plans of building a castle while you are there. They haven't decided yet where they are going to put it, but a fortune is going to be spent on it - a ridiculous sum that doesn't even make sense to you.

So you boot in and ask whether they wouldn't build it in Kent.

They look at you with a weirded out face.

"In Kent? You really think so? There are so many other places in need of defense. Besides, if they take Kent, we can always fall back to Holmgard, the fortress there hasn't been taken in five hundred years... I've been thinking we could put it somewhere near Cymbalus..."

"Cymbalus? Are you mad? How are we even going to defend our workers while they build there?"

"Yeah, that's a problem... you think we should build it in Torvalus?"

"If we build anything in the contested areas they are going to send endless amounts of troops to harass us. We can't spare enough warriors!"

"You're right... perhaps we could ask Count Zachary where in his county he thinks would be the best place to put a castle... but he's not here."

"Yeah, where is him?"

"He is sick, or so I heard."

"Who else is from his county that is here?"

"There are a few barons... including the new girl, from Kent."

"You guys really think it is a good idea to place a castle in Zachary's county? I mean... we have to put a castle Somewhere, otherwise we'll have to give the gold back to the crown..."

"No, no, no, that's unthinkable! Let's hold a vote... tomorrow. Study the proposals and check where you think is best."

You hear that they have Six locations where they could build the castle!

One of those is Kent!

But Kent is far from being the most defensible one. Or resource rich. Or crucial, really.

The other cities where they would build it are far larger, far better established, hold more crucial resources.

Still, you have a whole day to convince all those old military men to build a castle in your city!

Seems like the key players that hold the most influence are:

Marshal Leon Volt
Marshal Michael Farad
Marshal Stuart von Lucazs

You ask around and learn as much as you can about the three of them in just the spam of a few hours.

Marshal Leon Volt is the embodiment of old-blood military nobility — a stern, unflinching traditionalist raised in a household where discipline was sacred and glory was earned on the field, not granted in court. He holds a deep reverence for rank, lineage, and order, and sees the battlefield as a proving ground for both men and kingdoms. Though outwardly rigid and conservative, he harbors a quiet respect for those who rise through valor rather than birth, even if he rarely admits it aloud. His loyalty to the crown is absolute, and he is far more likely to respond to appeals to legacy, strategy, and loyalty than sentiment or ambition.

Marshal Michael Farad is a tactical mind wrapped in a mathematician’s patience. More architect than warrior, he views the world through the lens of angles, logistics, and inevitability. Where others see banners and borders, Farad sees supply lines, elevation maps, and the long game of attrition. He is meticulous, sometimes painfully so, and prefers solutions that are durable, economical, and rooted in practical execution. Though not cold, he is famously hard to sway with passion or politics — he listens best to numbers, feasibility studies, and cleanly reasoned arguments. Efficiency is his faith, and he follows it devoutly.

Marshal Stuart von Lucazs is as comfortable in a council chamber as on a campaign trail, known for his cunning blend of military skill and courtly manipulation. He understands that war is not just waged with steel, but with symbols, whispers, and carefully placed favors. A master of soft power, Stuart thrives in balancing ambition with diplomacy, and he often plays the long game — backing rising stars early to secure influence later. Charismatic but guarded, he prefers calculated risks to rash heroics and favors decisions that strengthen the appearance of unity and control. He listens keenly for how decisions echo through halls of power, not just the battlefield.

None of them seem currently inclined to build it in Kent.

How are you going to convince them?

Choose one argument to present to each of them in private, and one to present to the entire assembly!

> "Kent holds the Pass — without it, the heartlands are exposed."
> "We already have the towers. The groundwork is half-laid — less cost, faster result."
> "Marshal Leon, you remember what Kent’s archers did at the Pass. That was no accident."
> "The King just gave me the barony. A castle there affirms his wisdom — and his reach."
> "It’ll quiet the murmurs that the south is forgotten."
> "If Holmgard ever falls — and any fortress can — Kent becomes the last line."

Convincing them will work the following way:

Depending on your arguments, you will have from 30-80% chance of convincing each of them.

After you choose the arguments, I will reveal the Appeal Level of your argument and you will roll.

You have an Influence score of 1. You can choose one of the Four (Volt, Farad, Lucazs or the whole assembly) to gain a +10% chance of convincing them on your roll.

If you can convince at least 3 out of 4, you get the castle!

If you convince exactly 2, the decision is postponed and you will have to power broker some more, perhaps elsewhere.

If you convince 1 or 0, then you lose your chance at getting a Free Castle!

Your exposition of your point seems to impress almost everyone. Marshal Farad isn't particularly impressed, he still thinks there are better places to put a new castle, and can prove it mathematically.

But no one else is very interested in the old man's proofs. Or would understand them.

Despite his protests, the military elite feels more than happy to authorize the construction of the new castle in your barony!

They just need to fill a bunch of paperwork, but next year probably they will start building it.

You return home with great news!

When you tell everyone, they ask whether they should spread the news to the high winds!

You sentence the perpetrators to be thralls of the army for ten years! That will show them.

You force the priest to marry the girl. The priest ends up staying in town, preaching and asking for donations and help to build a chapel. But the people are rather poor, at this rate, it will take many years.

You tell the warriors returning from war to go live with their families, but you don't leave them with nothing - you gift them with lots of cattle for their troubles.

You send your people to go mine in the mountains. The chilling weather is not good for their health (-1 HEALTH), but they do bring some silver back (+1 MONEY).

You decide to attend a party at the palace. You spend some money of fancy dresses and gifts, putting the council in charge while you go there. You decide to take your husband with you, to show him off to the court.

The trip takes a long time, as many roads were blocked by heavy snow. One night you even get caught in a snow storm.

But you finally arrive! In the palace, there is music, and warmth, and food, and drink aplenty!

Queen Victoria seems well pleased with your auspicious marriage!

"Tavian is a good man, the two of you will be very happy together!"

"Count Zachary, meet Baroness Alita of Kent! I heard her new barony will gain a castle soon!", says the queen enthusiastically.

"Well, well, well. We haven't met before, though of course I had heard from you. I was ill for the longest time, but now I'm better. Quite a feat to convince those army men to build a castle in Kent. I've tried myself for many years, to no avail. Guess there was just none worthy to take up the mantle of nobility and run a barony in such a critical region. I'm glad the King noticed your qualities, lady Alita!"

He then drones on and on about the county and all the other baronies and how everyone is suffering from lack of men all over the county, specially the most devout villages who are enthusiastic to send all their men whenever there is a drive.

Then he mentions a mercenary group called Zalgo who set up a recruitment camp in his county. You display interest.

"Oh, the Zalgo? They are lead by a guy called... well, Zalgo. He is the third son of a local baron. His father allowed him to start a mercenary group. Their services are quite affordable, all things considered."

You could keep talking to Count Zachary to figure some improvement for the county, or go find someone else to gain leverage with.

Alas, there is only so much time in such parties. Entreating nobles takes such a long time! You may pick up to two:

> Ask Count Zachary if he'd be interested in creating a regional market in Kent
> Subtly suggest Kent could host a county-wide harvest fair
> Find a court scribe to befriend, maybe your messages to the King will be more noticed
> Offer aid to some other noble in distress
> Approach a wealthy merchant about establishing a trade post in Kent
> Offer some Kent minted silver as a tribute gift to the King, to show it is of the highest quality
> Pitch a new road to connect Kent with a more central market
> Arrange a meeting with Zalgo, to explore the possibility of mercenary support for Kent
> Ask a general or knight to sponsor a martial contest in Kent
> Share stories of Kent's militia defense, recruiting respect and future volunteers
> Gift a finely made Kentish bow to a general showing your barony's military tradition
> Dance gracefully with Tavian in front of everyone, making the marriage look strong and admirable
> Join a group of noblewomen in gossip, to learn hidden court alliances

You spend a very long time talking to Count Zachary about your new plans that you just came up with of having a new road built to connect Kent with a more central market. You went to a market once as a child, what was it called again...

"Silkmoth Plaza.", says Count Zachary, almost reading your mind, "It is the largest market in the region. They call it that because... well, the place is infested with silkmoths. That is what we get from planting too many mulberry trees.

"Do they produce a lot of silk there?"

"Yeah, it is the region that produces almost all the silk the kingdom uses. Everyone buys silk there to make dresses, like the ones most of the ladies here are wearing. The moths adapted well to the region. It is hard to transplant them elsewhere, though, they don't adapt well. I think the climate conditions, the humidity and the temperature are precisely what they need. Most of the money of the county comes from taxing silk. The majority of the villages pays only food tithe, but silk sells well everywhere."

"And who rules such splendid place?"

"That's the thing, the place is a Merchant Republic. A bunch of merchants founded the city and the founding charter says that seven families will take turns leading the town. No nobles. Still, since they are in my county, I tax them. You can't really avoid taxes, even if you found a whole city to do just that.", he laughs heartily.

"And they just accepted?"

"Well... no. We had a small war. But it was in the times of my grandfather! Today it is all water under the bridge, and they don't mind the low taxes. It is just 10%."

"Fascinating! I'd love to have a road built to them!"

"Well, roads take a lot of work to build... we can't quite spare the manpower right now... but that's an idea! Let's talk to one of the good fellows that runs that city, Sir Ferdinand. He is over there."

The two of you then go talk to sir Ferdinand.

"Sir Ferdinand! This bright young lady here just had an idea of building a road from your city to hers! Let me introduce you to Lady Alita of Kent, our newest baroness!"

"Ah! The tales of your brave defense of Kent Pass already reached my ears! It is a privilege to finally get to know you. Tavian is a lucky man!"

"Do you know my husband?"

"Yes, yes! He's been in our markets many times. To buy, to sell...", he was going to say something else but stopped himself.

"But Roads, right? Well, one big road. Well, if you could find the funding, I could find the workers. But I heard your vill... sorry lady, it is new to me, your Barony is... huh... broke?"

> "Not for long, we have plans to expand mining greatly soon."

"Not for long, we have plans to expand mining greatly soon."

"Expand mining, you say? So are you granting mining permits in your lands?"

You hadn't thought about it. So far you just sent people to mine and they gave you a 30% cut.

Which you've been spending... largely on fancy dresses, actually.

Though the mines of Kent really Are very productive... you just don't have enough workers to use them to full capacity.

Maybe if you granted some mining permits someone else could dig up the ore. They would pay you a nominal fee for the privilege!

You're pretty sure many people would be interested.

"Of course! We will grant mining permits for... five years!"

"That is great news! Come to Silkmoth Plaza, we can organize an auction!"

You schedule to go to Silkmoth Plaza next year to handle this issue!

Perhaps with two or three more meetings, you could get everything ready for that road you've been thinking about...

You return home, and the council informs you of everything that has occurred in your absence.

You order the woman who claimed to receive divine visions to be burned at the stake. The townsfolk gather in solemn silence — many believe it was the only way to cleanse the land of her unsettling presence.

You sentence the elders who falsified land records to death by stoning. Their own neighbors, the ones nearly robbed of their inheritance, step forward eagerly to carry out the punishment.

Disturbed by reports of eerie sounds in the silver mine, you personally ride out to investigate. Deep underground, you discover a network of narrow shafts where the wind howls through like a ghost’s cry. You explain it to the miners and demonstrate the harmless source — their fear fades, and work resumes the next morning.

You honor your promise and send 30 men to the front. Some of the recruits are boys whose age you're not entirely sure of — but they’re tall, proud, and more than willing to fight.

You ready the youth theater group to perform for the king. The costumes and travel preparations cost more than expected.

You order the planting of oats and organize the idle hands of the village into craft groups. Their work soon adds value to your stores.
