Oh, that is just great! Here you go again.
Last time you were a small time thief. You did the best you could to rise with the hand dealt to you, but you were too dumb to learn magic.
So all you did was steal as much gold as you could and stash it all away.
Who knows, maybe it will come handy?
But this time around you're aiming big. You want to gather enough essence to be born at least an Elemental Scion.
Though the fuckers do gatekeep hard.
Once you were one of them. In your first life. But you figured you wouldn't have enough time to complete the great work.
So you bound your soul to a soulstone and hid it in the ethereal plane.
Whenever you die, your soul is pulled away from the afterlife towards the soulstone.
After awhile, you regain your consciousness.
Then you need only traverse the endless expanses of the ethereal plane to gather enough essence, wait until a stillborn baby's soul leaves a free body for you, then you can incarnate again.
The thing is, in here, you gotta get creative to find yourself some essence. There is a lot, but it is always hidden, protected or some kind of trap to eat YOUR essence.
Where are you going to gather some essence?
> The Essence Mine. Ran by chained specters working for some lich, they recruit anyone capable of mining essence from raw emotional geodes they pull from the material plane using a stable warp portal. Very fancy stuff. They charge 50% of all the essence you can mine. Sometimes other miners try to steal your essence. The safest option. The only problem is that it takes FOREVER. And who wants to work all day forever? You will be born incredibly lazy.
> The Debt Collector. You... er... kinda of owe a lot of essence to some shady shades from the shadow dimension. You could always try to get a little bit more essence squeeze out of them. Even if they don't lend you any essence, they could have a good idea of how to get some. The danger is they might trap you into a Pain Crystal for all eternity for being such a bad debtor. Pain essence, you heard, is almost as good as actual essence. But it is useless to you. Once they release you, it is game on again! You will be born cold and psychopathic.
> The Ethereal Beast. A colossal, invisible leviathan glides through the endless ethereal skies. It feeds on residual essence, like a whale feeds on krill. Lots of creatures drift near it to eat its droppings. After a few eternities of eating leviathan shit, you might be able to get enough essence. The problem is there are competitors, even for eating shit. You will be born very beautiful though. Maybe with a propensity for coprofagia.
> The Gate of Neverborn. A locked gate leads to where all the unborn ideas live adrift. Sometimes, a little scrap of Pure Potential escapes. Over many eternities, you may be able to gather enough essence. But you'll be reborn with a mind full of stolen dreams, yearning to be accomplished. That can be dangerous.
