King Xander has had a temper since he was a young boy and as he’s gotten older his anger spells have become harder to control.
In the last few years the kingdom has lost several members of the court to it, including the queen a little while back.

This is also why you have the position you have.
You were originally just supposed to be shadowing one of the king’s advisors before he himself was killed. You've survived so far but you're not a happy survivor however.

Tonight that's because an envoy from a nearby kingdom has been left bloody and beaten in the hallway. You can hear him, his screams have turned to crying and wailing and you can't sleep.

The king is known for pacing around the hallways at night sometimes and you're not sure if he's coming back for him.

Under your bed in a large sack is where your winter blankets are.
There’s also a small chest filled with personal effects from home.
This includes a watch you haven't used in a long time, and a family portrait that your parents had illustrated before you went to the Royal University.

In your desk are a number of different things for note taking. Along with some rags for spills.
There's also various notes including ones done by the previous advisor. Things like the staff directory and the write-ups on court members are a little out of date.

You’ve considered this, but you're worried how long you’ll really be safe if you do. If you encourage him to do something and it goes badly there's a high chance he’ll blame you for it. At the same time if he wants to do something and you disagree with him that’s also difficult.

You take a peak out into the hallway.
The envoy is sitting slumped against the wall. Both his eyes are almost swollen shut. You can't tell if he's bleeding from his lips and his nose or just his nose. It's hard to tell how much bruising he has under his clothes but if it's anything like his face he's in pretty bad shape.

You go up and attempt to move him, he can't really see you approach so the second you touch him he panics and starts to scream. You try to cover his mouth but he gets a small scream out before you do and he’s thrashing around a lot.

You tell that you’re his best chance of survival and you're not sure if the hallway is safe for him. You are very careful not to mention that you know the king did this.
He quiets down but you can't seem to pick him up on your own, he is not able to do much better either.

You can drag him but when you try to move him across the stone floor he starts gritting his teeth and sounds like he wants to scream.
You need to move him onto something that you can drag him on without exacerbating his injuries.

There were apparently talks around the time the queen was killed but someone involved informed the king about it. You aren't sure who.
After that there were purges, some of them did successfully flee the kingdom but most did not.
A lot of the people left are not willing to risk that happening again or might sell out the conspiracy to get more favor with the king.

There is a crown-prince but you’ve met him and you don't have a lot of hope for his reign or that he would actually be able to overthrow the king.

There might be less legitimate heirs you don't know about but you don't know where you would even start in finding that information.
