It's human nature. People are more likely to engage when they disagree than when they agree. They're more likely to engage when they're angry, scared etc. Which makes it look like everyone's a psycho that can't make up their minds, when in reality it's many different people going in and out. It's like a revolving door selecting for the worst people. Good people don't get rage baited and just mind their own business so they're not very visible.

You're right anon. I remember a marketing professor told me that we view losses as more significant than gains. If you lost $1000 you'd be really pissed about it, but if you received a thousand dollars you'd just be like "oh cool a free month of rent"

I think it's even worse online because normal people lurk more than they interact. meanwhile the most abrasive personalities are responsible for most comments and engagement.

You're not "allowed" to do anything on the internet, so do it without permission. 90% of it is just gaslighting yourself into wondering what they know that you don't that makes them say these things about your goals, interests, personality etc. but it's genuinely meaningless. It's not you being complacent or ignorant, it literally just doesn't matter. Stop giving people authority they don't have in your mind.

Typical example
>go to other board, media related let's say
>"I like this"
>"Yeah well only tourists like this"
>"Yeah well I've been interested in this stuff for over a decade by now so cope"
>"Yeah but that doesn't count because-"
That conversation is already over. Are you actually going to be 'gatekept' out of a group you already belong to because of one reeing faggot? No. So no one's opinion intrinsically matters. Facts do. What a shocker.
