I'm in the same position, I understand your frustration. What I'll say is that the road might be rough, but you can only make progress if you try. Yes, you'll revert to bad habits, and yes, you'll feel like you're not making progress because you keep getting set back, but over a long enough period of time you'll be able to say "this is an improvement, I've gotten further than I was before."

The mistake is following ineffective advice. If the advice was good you wouldn't be asking for advice on here. You aren't giving us anything to work with except "I'm not happy". And I'm not sure if the goal is to be content or to be happy. I'm guessing it's the latter, but happiness doesn't last. People typically become happy when they make significant progress within an important domain of their life or achieve something exceptional. Here's the thing though: People quickly acclimate to new standards. And to get the same good feeling it must come from something exceptional, but every day cannot be exceptional. You should focus on becoming content. What would make you content? Be specific so people don't just parrot general, common advice you're probably familiar with already.
