Being superficially nice merely for the sake of being nice is inauthentic, it's a social mask to hide who you really are to avoid being judged. Saying what other people want to hear specifically so they'll like you is pathetic. It's weakness.
I also do choose to be happy, but I'm not happy all the time. I let my emotions exist as they come, when I'm sad, I'm sad. When I'm happy, I'm happy.
That is what it means to choose to be happy. It's not that you repress your own sadness or other such negative emotions, it's that you DON'T repress your happiness.
