It only started to become real "mainstream" in recent year's (specifically when MOOT left). 4 Chan only started to get flooded by normies when the site was vulnerable, and when was 4 Chan vulnerable? It became vulnerable when the site switched ownership, and some proof of that would be the site getting hacked and a tone of people getting banned and silenced in recent year's.
