The American system is good for emergencies and one off things, they can't turn you down for lack of ability to pay even if you're homeless but if you have a chronic condition like diabetes then pharmacies don't have to give you meds if you can't pay just like any business.

A socialized system is better for longer term conditions because meds are free but you have waiting times to see an actual doctor.
