Well, like every other state, California has huge empty expanses in between its cities. But New York has that too. Typically when people evaluate states, they're really evaluating the biggest cities. NYC is pretty good if you stick to the more aristocratic parts; LA, San Fran, San Diego, etc are all shitty throughout.
