Typical young, internet-using people do not accomodate for any kind of interaction which is negative on its face but simultaneously meant to be taken positively. They can only do this with something like sarcasm, which itself is often meta-ironic because it is genuine. I digress, my point is that they are incapable of viewing banter as something socially positive and good, and thus they take it at literal face value.
