anon, the first thing you must understand is relationships are not the same as friendships. yes, they should be your best friend, but it is not the same as a friendship.
second, it really depends on the maturity of the couple and their compatibility. one should willingly want to do things for their partner. of course, communication isn't always perfect, but that is how it is done. you ask someone to do something for you. at a certain point, if you find that communication doesn't get the need met, you either escalate or stop trying. if you find you get no needs met whatsoever, you check out of the relationship.
you're essentially asking why women (or even any man for that matter) have any expectations in a relationship
