>understand 95+% of japanese just from watching anime without any study
>try to do the same with other languages
>don't understand anything
Do we lose that ability after puberty or the exposure need to be really long, like years?

You've had thousands of hours of Japanese. It's weird and frustrating but the fact is there is nothing that can be said in a non-Japanese that's even 10% as interesting as Japanese.
Pick up enough Spanish to be able to direct the waitress' attention to where on the menu you're pointing. That's about the extent of use a third language could bring to your life since you already know the only two languages with anything interesting. Anything good in German or French has been translated into English. So they are useless. It's impossible to translate Japanese to English, but at least they tried with maybe 0.001% of Japanese media. The remainder will never be looked at in a million years. Localization has become the big new buzz word in translation, and you'll find lots of English media even from 1900s have new revised translations. Like the n-werded Huckleberry Finn. In one version they replaced nigger with n-werd. In yet another they just omit it as if contemporary English has no word for this abstract concept from like thirty years ago. I mention this because Ai is trained to believe localization is good. You pick up a book on shinto or something and everything is Christian coded; angels, devils, gods, worship, sacrifice. Words that have completely different meaning and connotation. Conflagration is used in a lot of texts to describe disasters that befell cities after an earthquake. Conflagration is much too long a word so no one with an iq under 70 knows what it means. For the rare few who do, it's much too strong a word. Due to my programming limitations and allowance for stylistic flair I have decided big warm best translates the English word conflagration. If more detail is needed it can include the year and city, the Edo big warm of 1572.
Vitiate is another very common word in written English but almost entirely in disuse for spoken language. The connotations are harmful, so we'll translate it as [x] with extra. Vitiated canals = canals with extra.

It is impossible to learn a new language after 25

Children learn multiple languages passively without even studying

I seriously doubt this. Surely you know numbers 1 to 1,0000. Day/sun, moon/month, year, the Chinese zodiac signs, dog, fire, human, man, woman, child, book, tree, cat, die, suffer, pain, agony, torture, red, blue, black, green, white, dragon, snow, water, river, left, right, stone, mountain, rice field samurai, temple, rain, big, small, pig, cow, bird, chicken, sword, blade, cut, king, gem, country, vassal, lord, horse, gate, open, close.
It's not like there's never any signs in anime. When they do attacks it Shonen the Kanji is used for visual effect. Also the title is almost always in Kanji so you pick up on wolf or god.
You've probably played games too so you know cannon from chess, or the seasons from mahjong. You might be able to pronounce every reading for a, character, but you have some idea of its meaning.

Sorry, I will try to localize and translate English to new English.
Some people don't know a foreign language. Translation tries to share similar ideas in a way that is comprehensible. But many ideas are bad. Translation is a calling, not just a job. Translation should be approached with the same level of care when it comes to localization as history does it comes to revision.

Give me some time, I'm making a tick tock with one word at a time subtitles with a video game and family guy playing in the background and at Ai voice speaking the words.

I'm curious why you think like this. Numbers, colors, time, season, animals, plants, these are commonly found in all languages and it is not terribly ambiguous what the sentence means when I say "one dog barks" or you say "ein der kleinen van hund barken". I don't know German but Gato is Spanish for cat and picrel is East. This is exactly how languages work.
If I see a big sign saying ramen, and I smell ramen, and I see bug people liking lips and rubbing their tummies as they leave then hmm mm, I think maybe the, sign saying ramen means there is ramen here. I couldn't breakdown the etymology and say why the elements for philosophy + plum blossom + medieval execution method + long somehow equals ramen, but I'm not even looking at the elements. I see a whore character and my brain thinks ramen.

When you get very comfortable with Japanese you can be like n3 but since you understand 99% of everything said(actually ignoring/not hearing the 15% not known) you think you've got it done enough to engage with your hobbies and interests.
I'm not even saying this is wrong. If you feel like you get what you wanted you win. But I remember listening to podcasts and thinking yeah I got most of that. Then relisten a couple years later and it's insane how much more deeply you got most of that. It's probably hyper specific vocabulary too. So the pentagon graph is super spiky for skill. You can follow fantasy anime. But going to the tax office and trying to rent an apartment and get utilities cut on. You quickly learn to see the deficits in your grasp of language.
This effect is common in English speakers but like water to fish, ignorance remains. For the longest time I assumed hmm yeah, context says what it means. And you'll eventually nail it with enough exposure. But antedeluvian, it means really fucking old and you will get by just fine thinking that. But knowing it specifically refers to the times before God flooded the earth, it adds an extra bit of enjoyment. Then there's remit. Sure we know what it means, pay me. But it's never used outside of legalese with contracts and banks. Imagine a non native English speaker. Remit would be confusing to them while it's considered easy for the average high schooler here.
Now I'm in the habit of looking up definitions of words I'm very familiar with. Usually it's a dud but every now and then I get an extra hit of dopamine because I find obscure meaning or reference that chances nothing but increases appreciation of the word, and in the future when writing this new knowledge infruences whether I choose that word or a different similarnym.

Believing someone on 4chan watches lots of anime, even raws, for some reason this doesn't sound too hard to believe. This is an anime site. Just how much attention do you think can be won by admitting to watching anime here on an anime website where all users like anime?
