I graduated college in '23, so ChatGPT was only available for the last semester of college. I used it once to generate a closing paragraph for an essay. I didn't use it more often because I felt that it didn't output very good work.

Why would I pay to get an education just to cheat and not learn anything? That sounds retarded.

I'm so glad I was in college in the 2000s and not the 2020s.
I always worried about the possibility of being wrongly accused of cheating when I was in school because I'm paranoid like that. Having chatgpt exist would have made that fear a thousand times worse.

No. I tried using it occasionally but was just too stupid for college. If you had lower standards I guess it would work but it took so long for me to get it to output high quality work that it would have been faster to just do it myself.
>picrel
He's a fucking idiot. Your degree can be revoked even after you graduate if they learn you cheated.

you pay for the certificate, not the education. 90% of the shit you learn in undergraduate you will never use.

I don't really think it can constitue 'cheating', it's really more like a tool. You still need to spend time understanding and editing the material to make it not-obvious.
I graduated before it became popular, but oh my god it is a game-changer to the highest degree.

The interesting thing is, students are actually getting even MORE lazy that they still get shit grades with these tools at their disposal

MFer I just finished college , you do know they can check if youre using AI right?
>Inb4 chink got away with...
DEI rules, they simple claim they don't speak English good and the school has to grade then "fairly" (for now they're starting to catch on).

That's my point, anon.
The check they do sometimes wrongly flags people who wrote their papers themselves as though they cheated and used AI.
I would be paranoid about getting wrongly accused if I were a zoomer.

teacher here, the tools we use to "check" AI are all bullshit. There are certain tells that make it quite obvious, but its impossible to prove.

>college students are now retarded... because they can just read a text that tells them the answers
We have had a solution for this problem since forever. It's called on-site examination. It's the universities obsession with "doing research" and writing papers that is going to get disrupted by chatGPT and even then you can just have the students do scriptless presentation and thesis defense or something.

This guy is retarded. Colleges can revoke degrees any time, even after you graduate. In fact, they have to revoke degrees when they know students cheated if they want to keep their accreditation.

I remember I got wrongly accused of cheating once, it was a mess. Had to trace all the sources and admit whatever little parts I took as inspiration that wasn't even a direct copy, just to avoid more trouble

I'm not surprised, you americans are trained to write like robots. I was mystified when I did a homework for a cute girl and the feedback was something like "the content is great but the paragraphs need x sentences" and other irrelevant tripe

They're not bullshit, it's really a rvb race, just like hacking and lockpicking and jailbreaking and so on.

It might feel like bs though depending on the decision made by the institution. They have the power to be strict about it, or to not care and prioritize le sucess story.

i would have if it was around in the day
i use it in engineering grad school now (it's more of a professional program - most people do it while working). it depends what you mean by cheating. It's more of a tool - like Wolfram back in the day. I use it to help me check my work. Half the time I have to check it, because it will spout answers with 100% certainty while being totally off-base.

it's extremely useful for uploading lecture slides and having it extract key information from it - specifically useful engineering equations. Many of the lecture slides for these programs load incredibly and are a pain to navigate through. The textbook for the course is also the same textbook for much of the program - so it's too general to cite. Uploading the lecture notes into it allows it to summarize what's relevant so you don't go too off the rails for what they intend, otherwise, you'd be stuck in ambiguity hell. it's also useful for correcting code, if say - a MATLAB or python script seems to be not doing what you want with the syntax. Also use it for work. Most the time I struggle with syntax. Or, I simply want a more efficient way to code something rather than implementing a billion if/else loops due to coding not being my predominant background. If you guide it correctly, it will lead you far. You have to have the base knowledge to not let it lead you astray.

Writing wise, I've never let it write an entire paper for me. I have let it correct some of my language or clean it up.
