Western society portrays it as so, yeah
A competition for individual happiness
In reality I think it is more akin to a clown show. You get thrown into it, nothing makes sense, you might even hate it, but you can't escape it. You just have to wait until the end

even outside of human society, life for every single animal and living thing has always been a competition. that is what living means, to survive.

No because you're not even allowed to compete. You're disqualified from the start. You're genetically weird.

If you live in a developed country chances are you're not just trying to survive. We're past that. What's left of it is cultural shackles, abused by those in power to take advantage of you

Inherently, yes. We're animals competing for the chance to pass on our genetics and keep them alive for long enough to do the same.

Anyone who tells you anything different is delusional or has something to sell you. What meaning YOU make out of life is the only meaning you'll ever find.

Our technology might be past that, but we're just as animal as ever. Trying to blame it on the cultural leftovers is just shifting the blame. I've observed a lot of people. Humans WANT to compete. They want to complain, to find another human to be better than. If the natural environment of brutal competition in nature doesn't provide that for them, they'll find it elsewhere. Even the nicest, or most innocent seeming people are still unknowingly or knowingly participating in the fucking over of others for personal gain. There's not one person who doesn't do it, not one person who won't do something for enough money or for an attractive enough mate.

Humans want to compete because it's fun. They also want to fuck because it feels nice. Can I make the argument that the point of life is to fuck as much as possible and even justify rape? No.
There are many ways to satisfy one's drive for competition. In fact the vast majority of people ends up competing on tasks that when you really look at it, are mostly meaningless.
The cultural shackles are the socially accepted idea that individualistic competition between humans is justified in all aspects of life, instead of maybe a selected few.
