What you're referring to at first sounds like street hypnosis, which is actually extremely common and you have probably had it too. It doesn't cause crashes though, that is just people being stupid.

Zoning out in this context just means you enter a flow state where your brain is driving on autopilot because you've done it so often. It's only retarded in extremely high-stakes unpredictable road conditions.

I think if you drive along the same roads all the time it just becomes routine.

I never drove enough to get past feeling anxious the whole time driving, mostly because I didn't do it often.
But when on a bike path, especially one I have all to myself, I pretty much go on auto-pilot when doing longer rides. Otherwise my attention would get nagged by dozens of little uncomfortable things and lower my mood instead of raise it.
However when sharing the road with cars I have to be fully locked in for my own safety.
It's isn't that I might fuck up, I have to preempt someone in several tons of steel fucking up and intentionally splatting me with only half a second warning.
Had several close calls, especially around the holidays when people start drinking or driving while sleepy.
