Apart from watching a few movies from there, they don't seem to be that much less developed than countries like in the mediterreneans.
At this point i could also include the maghreb region.
There's a lot of bias for some regions because of the lenguage barrier with the exception of countries like japan or south korea that arereally popular. Some people still have to realize how much china is a developed country but now that video games and movies are starting to come out of there too people will soon realize that too.

Vietnam is still more similar to the rest of peninsular SE Asia than it is to China. They're all influenced by India and China to a degree (hence why it's called indochina).
