Are 4channers smarter than Tumblr users? The demographics appear similar on the surface (both very structured around hobby/nerd culture and attract neurotic people) but in reality they couldn't be more different. 4chan tends to attract people who channel their negative emotions into self hate whereas Tumblr users channel it into leftist politics.

My theory is that 4chan attracts an overall more intelligent demographic that trusts logic more while Tumblr users, though smarter than average, get way too caught up in their intense emotions. So 4chan is probably smarter. What do you think?

Okay I'm a little bit dizzy I'll admit that doesn't make much sense. I mean when you look at the site as a whole, not any specific board, the people on here definitely tend to skew towards angry loners with issues socialising and the overall self hate is likely going to consume more of their negative emotional energy. Meanwhile Tumblr users are more likely to channel anger into factors outside of their control which makes them more likely to gravitate to politics.

im both a 4chan and tumblr user, i agree that theyre quite similar. the oversimplified way to put it is tumblr is 4chan for women. modern tumblr is also very dissimilar from what most people imagine when they talk about tumblr. theres still a lot of extreme leftists but the politics you see there are much more diverse now and the people are a lot more diverse. the userbase has aged a lot which also makes a big difference. but generally any differences between this site and tumblr these days can be chalked up to tumblr being mostly female and 4chan being mostly male. 4chan is angrier because men are angrier, tumblr is more emotional because women are more emotional etc. take from that what you will in regard to your intelligence question

tumblr is much smarter on average. the top 1% of 4chan might be smarter than the top 1% of tumblr, but i'm very unconfident in that

socially progressive views are very strongly correlated with higher intelligence. economic views have inconsistent study results but evidence points towards economic leftism slightly inversely correlating with intelligence

given a lot of 4chan is socially rightist and economically leftist (be it socialism or trumpism/bannonism/protectionism) one should expect most of 4chan to be quite unintelligent, and i think this is borne out
