Its fun. My grandma has a small lake and my parents have property on a river. Its quite relaxong to just sit on the bank and cast a line a few times. I very rarely actually catch anything but its still pleasant and i enjoy doing it.

I used to fish with my mom's boyfriend for crabs near the louisiana gulf in my mid teens. We used to use instead of traditional bait, cheap butcher cuts like turkey neck with lines of rope or string tried through them. got the worst hand injury of my life in the process of cutting bait one day, but I still loved every minute of being out there. I've only line fished once but I enjoyed it honestly, and spent the rest of my teens wishing we went to do it again.

used to go w my father
didn't realize until adulthood whenever i told people that they'd assume it meant we both fished, instead of him fishing and me sitting by for hours doing nothing waiting to go home
>why didn'-
did, once or twice, but he got pissed helping me fish so i stopped being a bother

I used to go fishing with my grandpa who had a boat. I loved being out on the open ocean but honestly I hated actually catching fish. Having the take the hook out of their mouths and then slowly kill them via suffocation.

Fun in the moment, but the sunburn is never worth it even if they're delicious. I have sunscreen resistant skin. Doesn't matter how much or how often. More than 15 minutes and I'm a lobster.

I am not an expert or anything, but that image looks slightly edited, mate. Can't really tell why, but something seems off.

I caught 2 fish, 1 eel and 1 cluster of clamps in my entire life. What I am trying to say is, I suck at fishing and will never try it again.

You have a good day.

any summer we went out of state to my grandparents, we usually fished at some point. back when we were young, the whole family would make a thing of it and they'd rent a pontoon on a large lake for the day. as we got older, we did more and more shore fishing and renting a boat was harder to do.
we'd catch all sorts of fish, but usually sunfish and bluegills with the occasional bass mixed in.. maybe rarely some pike or walleye. personally i was always happy catching some fat sunfish and bass, grandpa would fillet and fry them all up and they were always good eating. if you ask me, pikes are a nuisance to eat, of course nice to catch and they have a lot of meat, but the Y bones are so aids to deal with. i'd watch diligently when he taught my mom to fillet instead when he was starting to have trouble.
a few years ago, grandpa gave me a huge tackle box with all sorts of gear in it, even has a gaff hook that's comically oversized for anything we'd actually catch. when he sold his house, i bought a couple more tackle boxes and his military memorabilia. he's still around, but my mom isn't; it's hard to get back there without her insisting on visiting.
most of the fishing around here is fly fishing, which i do want to try, just don't have any relevant gear.

Fishing is very based if you're in a spot where you can actually catch a lot of fish. If you're not then it can be very boring, but perhaps also a good idea to be peaceful and contemplative while out in nature. Overall a good activity.

I was reading some old book and it talked about the difficulties of feeding the men logging in the forest, how early they'd have to get up and start cooking. The bit about fishing stood out. Said it typically took about an hour to catch 40 fish. Even in artificially stocked lakes I'm not getting that kind of rate. It's like your f2p afk on osrs at barbie village, only 90 fishing and you're catching them about as fast as you can shift click them. Nature's bounty must have really been something back then in the virgin forests of America.
I've been reading about soil too. Somehow it's depleted all over and not just in farm land. Various suggestions on what the cause might be but it's either too much nitrogen acidifying, or poop particle runoff throwing off bacteria balance which eats up nitrogen and carbon, or build up of sodium. Stuff like boron is pretty much dissappeared when used to apples were known as a great source. The fungal holocaust probably has something to do with it. Ancient networks destroyed, and these networks ran broad and deep allowing plants and forests to communicate across miles. Sounds like some scifi shit. But nobody thinks of fungus. Just la la la, hmm today I will grow plants. *nukes the surrounding area with herbicides and fungicides and pesticides*. Hmm why is our food making us sick? I eat all my vegetables and get my 12 servings of grain a day as suggested by the food pyramid.

Dams and other structures have reduced the spread of minerals across land via water too. It makes me seethe out of control when I think about how easy our ancestors had it compared to us. Abundant healthy food all around them, they weren't being deliberately poisoned on a massive scale, families were large and connected, and life was simple. Right now is the worst time to live in all of history. This level of slavery and sabotage is unprecedented, and it is only possible because of technology.

The single greatest "sport" to ever exist.
>chill as fuck
>get to sit outside in nature the whole time
>quiet
>can do other stuff or just relax during
>exhilarating when you get a bite
>all fishermen I've met are super nice and help out
>you get free, delicious, fresh food from doing it
the ONLY problem I have is how much a hassle dealing with equipment and lines and lures can be, but that's probably just my inexperience more than anything.
