Violence works plenty fine on pretty much anything, animals and humans a like. Rape, threats, extortion are examples of this, if someone is weaker than you, inflicting pain to make them fear you and do as you want just works. I mean its how people have controlled others forever, but nowadays its outlawed. Inflicting physical violence on animals or humans is considered a crime and morally bad.

So I find it odd that the only thing you are allowed to beat is your kids. Not even your dogs, just kids......
