I've been saving for a few years now, should I go about buying my own house or rent and keep working?

It really depends. The best home for you might be one that you need to rent or it could be one that you need to buy. But renting is more advised if you're just starting out.
You should go and visit places you're interested in purchasing to know if you'll like them or not. And be careful with real-estate people. They use language that minimizes the importance of severe problems to lull you into believing they won't be major issues when the responsibility falls on you to deal with them.
