This is a very generic 4chan answer but not putting his foot down when his website became "NO FUN ALLOWED" Tranny paradise. Frankly he should have sold SA long before that happened anyway.

They let GBS turn into their own version of /r9k/, being flooded with the kind of normalfaggotry people were trying to escape from in the first place. As the actual funny people left for greener pastures, proto-sjws took over and eventually gained mod positions and started enforcing their own culture.

something awful was ground zero for most of the internet left and right. the right would get kicked off the site and reform on other forums, 4chan, and twitter. something awful was taken over by fat cat ladies and commies who would be the origin of obama era hyper online identity politics that would go on to infect the world.
all in all a forum of elitists who think they are better than you but are actually the worst people on the planet.

I think it's just that everyone who mattered moved on (to here or social media). Those web 1.0 forums were a relic from 1999, they weren't going to stay popular forever.

Without the better users, the site's humor suffered and it eventually fizzled out into irrelevancy. Like Fark or YTMND.
